Built a Wreck Out of Me

Surely this is my sign, right?

At first when I opened my eyes all I saw was white but after blinking I realized it was just a hospital room. I put my hands to my head and rub it slightly and across my eyes adjusting my eyes sight. "Hey, look who's awake." Martha said as she came in to check on me. "Hey." I said in a scratchy voice. "Here, Dasani. Just like you like, water snob." I took the bottle of water from her hands and took a long sip. She walked around and checked various things. "So what happened this time?" She asked.

"Well, I left him and-" He face shot up from the clip board. "Really?" "Yeah, but he found me and tried to take me bag but I head butted him and fought back, I'm just really tired of his bullshit." "It's about time, Paige." I nodded my head. "Alright, you twisted your ankle and have bruises littering your torso, bruises up your arms and you got stitches in your forehead from where you hit his teeth. Also you have two broken ribs." I nodded again as she set my clip board down. "Can I get out of here now?" I asked her.

"Sure, let me get your papers and such." She turned and left the room. I saw my pile of jack's clothes in a chair so I stood up but sat back on the bed as I quickly realized my ankle hurts like a bitch. I tried again and made it over there. I untied the gown and slipped back on my borrowed clothes, which were actually way comfier than my clothes. I walked back over to the bed and sat on the edge. She came back in with a huge ace bandage and my papers.

I stood up and she helped me put on the bandage, around my ribs and then I signed the papers. "So, Martha, where's the girl I came in with?" "The one who was also hurt?" I nodded. "Room 216." I nodded. "Anything else I'll be up there." I said and limped down the hall to the elevator. I got in and pushed down. Heading down the hall to her room I knocked and walked in. "Alana?" I questioned. All faces shot up to look at me. "What the fuck, Paige?!" Vic shouted standing up. "She could have gotten seriously injured!" Mike shouted. I stood in shock but began to back up as they approached me.

"I-I didn't mean for this to happen." I said in a low voice reaching the wall across from her room. "Guys! Cut the shit!" Alana yelled. I quickly as I could passed the two of them and hobbled into the room. I walked over and Alana mad grabby hands at me. I crawled in next to her. "You ok?" I asked as we continued to hug. "Yeah, just some head trauma, and I was never close to dying. You ok?" She asked. "Yeah, I'm fine as long as you're good." I said to her. I sat up at the end of her bed.

"You didn't need to do that you know?" I said looking down at my hands. "I told you to go back inside." I continued. She reached over and took my hand in hers. "I did it, cause you're my best friend and I would do it again cause I love you. Now what exactly did he do to you?" She asked I knew she could see the bandage around my ankle and the bruises on my arms not to mention the gaze pad on my forehead. "Um... Stitches in my forehead, two broke ribs and a twisted ankle, then all the bruises." I said smiling at her.

"It's not fair you know, you finally got the courage to run away and get treated like this." I made a smile at her. "I know but it just sucks seeing you dragged into this." I said starting to stand up. "Can you get out of here?" I asked. "Yeah, do you wanna go sign my papers for me?" She asked. "Sure." I nodded and limped out of her room and headed over to the checkout desk. "Paige," I heard Vic. "Are you gonna yell at me again? Cause I can go home for that." I said to him and Mike as they approached me.

"No, no. We wanted to actually say sorry. What did you mean by home?" He continued. "My Ex-boyfriend is the one who attacked me, he was trying to take me with him. I'd be in that house I call hell right now if it wasn't for Alana." Their facial expressions changed and Vic pulled me into a hug. “Shit, I’m so sorry.” I pulled away. “It’s fine. I’m gonna check her out ok, then I’m gonna take her home, I mean it is my fault she’s even in here in the first place.” I said turning back to the counter.

I hated that I said that twisting his words making him feel guilty but also saying what I truly believed. Maybe if I just went back to him things would be ok, maybe he would finally change, I mean it’s something worth trying right- “Sally, what the heck? I’m gone for 15 minutes to get you some food for when you wake up and I return to an empty room, no Sally, and some woman telling me you already have been checked out.” Jack came walking over with a Taco Bell bag.

“Dude, you got Taco Bell.” I said pulling the bag from his hands. “Well, yeah. Alana said that it was your favorite for fast food…” With a huge smile across my face I leaned up and kissed his cheek. “Thank you…” “Hi, Mam. How may I help- Oh, hey Paige. What are we in today for?” Lindsey asked. “Well, long story but it was Mike again but that’s over with, but I’m actually here to check out room 216.” She pulled a piece of paper out and handed me a pen, signing my name I handed her back the pen.

She ran off to make a copy of it leaving Jack and I standing there. “You know it was really sweet of you to stay with me…” I trailed off rubbing the side of my arm, a nervous habit I had, and looking down at my shoes. “Only for you, Sally. But I have a question?” I looked up at him leaning against the counter. “What’s the deal-” “Alright, am I giving Ms.Fuentes her check or-” “No, just you know put it on my tab… I guess.” She nodded and walked off again. “Tab? How often are you here and why?” Jack asked.

“I dated this guy since my freshman year and he was super sweet but after high school I tried to leave for college and he got abusive and wouldn’t let me leave or do anything,” I looked away from him. “And well I finally had enough of it and left but he found m-me and n-now my best friend is hurt and it’s a-all my fault, and her b-brothers h-hate me.” Jack’s had pulled my cheek carefully to look at him. “No one hates you, Alana certainly doesn’t blame you and I’m sure Mike and Vic didn’t understand the situation. Why would you stick around him so long?”

I limped over sitting down in the uncomfortable plastic chairs. “When you love someone you’ll do anything for them,” Jack sat down and took my hand in his seeing that I’m still crying. I smiled. “But I’m starting to think it wasn’t love as much as it was being whipped into believing it was,” The hand Jack wasn’t hold I clenched into a fist and gripped as hard as I could. “Cause I really hate him, I really hate him he’s brought me nothing but pain and loss and it’s not fair,” I looked at Jack to see he’s just watching me. “And to tell you the truth I’m scared. Scared of what might happen if I go back to my apartment, or if Alana goes back to hers, I’m j-just so t-terrified.” He pulled me into him and I wrapped my arms around his torso letting the tears fall. “Shh, it’s gonna be ok. I may have a solution, ok?” He pulled away cupping my cheek in his hands, carefully.

“I’ll be right back.” He said hopping up and heading down the hallway. I pulled my feet into the chair leaning my head atop my knees. I stared at Alana threw the little sliver, she had gotten dressed by now in regular clothes. I’m much worse than Alana, physically hurt wise (Ok and mentally) but I don’t want anyone to know that. Alana came out of the room taking a seat next to me. “You didn’t have to do that.” I looked over at her. “Sure I did, I’m the reason you got hurt-” “No that fucking dick shaft is. You did nothing but help me after I helped you.”

She took my hand and I smiled at her letting my tears dry. “Alana, I think we should stay in a hotel for a while…” I trailed off. “I actually don’t need to…” I looked at her in confusion. “Mike and Vic want me to come with them…” She said. I smiled and pulled her into a hug. “T-that’s great Alana! More bonding time with your bros, I’m so excited for you!” “Paige, I’m sorr-” She started but got interrupted by Jack running down the hall. “Sally! Sally! SALLY!” He yelled running over and picked my body out of the chair bridal style and spinning me around.

“Jack, put my fat ass down!” I yelled. He gave me a look as if you’re not fat and set me down. “Guess what!?” He asked I smiled and rolled my eyes as he was still holding both my hands. “What, Jack?” I asked laughing. “I asked the guys and they would like the idea of you accompanying us the rest of tour.” He said excitedly. My mouth fell open and I pulled him into a hug. “Really?” I asked against his shoulder. “Yeah, I don’t want you all by yourself… ever.” He said into my ear. I smiled and continued my hug as long as Jack was willing. We pulled away enough for Alana to be ready and her bros ready, who still weren’t talking to me.

“Looks like we’re finally getting our senior road trip.” Alana said nudging my arm as we left the hospital. I giggled and used her to hold me up as I limped. “Yeah, except I’m not skinny or attractive anymore.” I said with a laugh. Jack pulled my arm from Alana’s shoulder and wrapped an arm around my waist then placed my hand on his shoulder. “We both know that’s a lie.” He whispered into my ear. “So you think, I lived it, I would know how hot I was.” I said as we walked over to a car I assumed was a rental. “We’re gonna go to your apartment and get your stuff, and I’m coming with you.” Jack said trying to be forceful but sweet. “Ok.” I spoke as he helped me into the car.
