Jack POV

I already got half of my monthly wage straight away after the first day. We had only discussed a few recipes, David had shown me how to do some and introduced me to the cash register that sometimes didn’t really work. We had a good time and laughed a lot. A few customers had come in and I had baked a Tarte Tatin (a delicious apple cake), cooked a wine soup and made a salad.

We closed at 7 since it was not a regular restaurant but only a snack bar for the day. In future however, we would have days on which we would be open for longer.
It was still early enough for me to go and shop with my new money. I wanted to give Alex back a bit and buy myself some things.

My first stop was a drug store. It took me quite some time to find what I desired but in the end I found it. It was the present for Alex. “Exotic Egypt” was “a bubble bath that will make you feel like you are surrounded by servants who are waving delicious smelling air on you”. I bought it together with a new razor for me and a toothbrush. My next destination was a clothing department store. It was cheap clothing but I found myself a pair of semi-skinny blue jeans and black semi-skinny skinny jeans as well as a flannel button down and a few shirts in various colours. I picked up a rose too at a flower store and then made my way home.

It felt great to say “home”. A place to go when you are finished with whatever you have to do. A nest you can go and hide or be happy in. A place where a lot of memories collect. Even if it wasn’t really my apartment, it still felt like home.

I unlocked the door to find Alex sitting on the sofa with his guitar. He was completely lost in the music, strumming away and singing. His eyes were closed and I didn’t dare make a sound so he wouldn’t notice I was here. The song he was playing wasn’t one I had ever heard before. His voice was clear and beautiful, the guitar part was great and nicely done. I was sucked into the song like nothing.

He strummed the last chord and let it ring. I accidentally made a little sound and instantly, he tore open his eyes and jumped a little bit.

“Oh, Jack! I didn’t know you were here!” he squeaked.

“Hi Alex,” I greeted him with a smile. He looked nervous.

“What did you hear?” he asked hesitantly.

“Just a part about someone who is loved by another person?”

“Oh, well,” Alex squeaked.

“What is it?” I asked curiously.

“Nothing, just a song I wrote.”

“Tell me.”

Alex shook his head no and then got up to walk over to me.

“How was the interview?” he asked. I sighed and decided to let the song slip. I’d find out about it later.

“I have the job,” I said with a grin, enjoying a grin growing on his face too.

“That’s great!” he said, kissing me.

“Which brings me to my next point; I have something for you,” I said, watching as he smiled even a little more.

“What no! You didn’t have to,” he said but I knew he was just being polite. He was actually thrilled. I got out the rose and the bath essence. He looked at it and then up at me again.

“Aww, you’re so cute! Thank you so much,” he said, kissing me.

“I love you,” I whispered

“I love you more,” he said with a cute smile.

After a long hug I handed him the 20$ he had given me at the very beginning.

“Keep it,” Alex said.

“No, I won’t,” I gave back. He frowned.

“Please?”

“No,” I said. He sighed and took it.

“Thank you. Now, you need to tell me everything,” Alex said, putting the kettle on. “Mint tea?”
