Unicorn Hair

Chapter 8

For the past few months I have lived in different places, some nicer than others, but place where I lived now was more than horrible. Well, technically, I wasn’t living there, because I wasn’t allowed to, but I needed some place to stay, at least for a while.

The place was someone’s basement filled with old boxes. Everything was wet: floor, ceiling, walls, boxes and probably want’s in them too. Sometimes at night I got some company – rats, but they made it clear, they won’t stay here too long. It was too bad place for them. I felt miserable, even rats got better place to go.

I didn’t want to stay here too long, because owner of house above me had already discovered my being in his property and had made it clear to me get out, but I really had no place to go and I hadn’t had anything normal to eat for weeks. I was tired and weak and this basement, as horrible as it was, was the best place for now.

I slept in my usual spot, on floor, when I heard voices above me. Of course there were people living, but they usually were quiet, but this time talking was louder and both voices belonged to men. I sat up and tried to listen more carefully. Has he called for someone to finally get me out? He said I can stay for few more days, but not another week, which I had already spent down here.

Both voices started to come closer and I crawled behind some boxes in the darkest corner of basement. They opened doors and small light entered the darkness of my hiding place.

“You can take them all if you need. They are down here far too long and my wife has been nudging me for at least two months to get rid of them, but they are worth something, you know. I can’t just throw them away,” the voice belonged to basements, and houses, owner.

“I totally understand that, but I’m sorry to say that I really don’t need more than twenty of them,” voice belonged to someone who I have never heard around here.

“Well then, you can take twenty, but know that you can get more any time you need.”

“Sure, thank you. How much it would be?”

“Just as we talked, two for each box,” he came closer to my hiding place and picked up one big box which was right next to me. He saw me and stopped for a moment our eyes sucking deep inside of each other, “on the other hand, you can get four boxes for free if you find him place at yours.”

He turned around to stranger who now came closer to us, interested in what he was talking about. When he came in sight I saw tall, thin man around his sixties staring with wide eyes at me.

“You want to give me a boy?” clear surprise in his voice.

“Well, he’s not exactly a boy anymore. How old are you anyway?” he turns back to me.

“Six…sixteen,” I stutter, eyeing both men.

“I really don’t know. You do know what we are doing at House and he’s way too young to be forced for that and I’m not the one to force anyone for things they don’t like to do.”

“He doesn’t need to do that if he doesn’t want to, but at least give him a normal place to live. He’s been living down here for past few weeks and if my wife will find out about him then boxes will be the least of my problems.”

Terrifying silence filled basement. I didn’t want to stay in this basement, but i didn’t know anything about this man. What if sells as slave somewhere? What if he’s serial killer? Well, then you would be finally at peace.

“I guess I can give him a room till he stands on his own feet,” old man says, still a bit skeptical.

“Great!” huge smile spreads across owners face, “you heard that? Get up; you will be going with him.”

I look up to both of them, really not understanding what’s happening here. Where exactly is – with him. What will I need to do there and why did they decide my life?

“I’ll go put these boxes in your cart,” he hurried back upstairs with box in his hands.

“What’s your name, boy?” old man looked at me.

“A…Alex, but I…”

“Don’t worry. I don’t bite and with me you’ll be safe. As long as you would like to stay at my house, you’ll be safe,” he smiled at me and that’s the moment when I put my life and fate in this old man’s hands.
