Jack paced back and forth in his kitchen. It had been over two hours since Alex had called. He was beginning to worry. He tried Alex’s cell, and there was no answer, so he decided he would go to his house. Jack pulled on his favorite Ravens sweatshirt, followed by his sneakers, before running out the door. He didn’t want to seem to eager, so he walked slowly. When he reached Alex’s house, he made his way up to the door. Cautiously, he knocked on it three times. He didn’t hear anyone inside, so he turned to leave. That’s when the door was pulled opened, and he was surprised with a high pitched squeal.

“Jack, how are you?” He heard isobel screech. He turned, a smile forced on his face.

“Hi, Mrs. Gaskarth.” Jack said, letting her embrace him in a hug. “Is Alex around?” He asked when he was finally released.

“No, dear. He said he was going to the park to meet a couple of people, and then he was going to work on a physics project.” Isobel said, her face falling slightly.

“Oh.” Jack said, not able to hide the disappointment in his voice. “How long ago did he leave?”

“Over an hour and a half ago.” Isobel said. “You can wait here if you want, I’m sure he’ll be along.” She offered. Jack shook his head, declining politely.

“Uh, no thanks,” He said. “I have a project I have to be working on.” Isobel smiled, and nodded in understanding.

“Alright sweetie. It was nice to see you.” Isobel said, wrapping Jack into another hug.

“You too.” He said, waving as he walked away. He decided he would check the park, to see if Alex was there. He walked quickly, keeping his head down and his hood up. It was windy outside, and the air was chilly. Jack kept his hands shoved into the pocket of his pants as he walked. When he was only a block away from the park, he heard someone behind him.

“Jack, is that you?” The voiced asked. It was vaguely familiar. Jack turned, to find Rian standing behind him. He smiled, and waved. “What are you doing?” He asked, clapping him on the back. Jack shrugged.

“Just walking. I was sick of sitting at home.” He said, looking towards the park. He saw Alex’s group of friends stroll out. They were laughing, and it looked like they had just had a successful beating. The look that was always on their faces when they got done with Jack.

“I get it, man. Need some company?” Rian asked, obviously seeing the group. Jack nodded, and smiled.

“Thanks.” He said, walking towards the park. They saw Zack stop when he saw Jack and Rian approaching. He walked right up to them, and instantly started with Jack.

“I see you got your bodyguard today, Barafag.” He said, getting some laughs from his friends behind him. Rian stepped defensively in front of Jack, shoving Zack back.

“Get the fuck out of here, Zack.” Rian said through his teeth, his face red with anger. The boys laughed, holding up their hands in sarcastic defeat.

“Ooooh, big bad Rian. I’m so scared.” Zack said, stepping closer and getting in Rians face. “Are you and Jack butt buddies? Is that why you’re so defensive of him?” Zack asked, laughing. He turned to his friends, and in an instant he was up against the brick wall. Rian had a tight grip on his neck, and Zack was terrified.

“I’m serious, you fucking prick. Leave, or I’ll hurt you.” Rian threatened, pushing Zack to the side. He motioned for his friends to follow him, but before disappearing, he turned to Jack.

“I suggest not going into the park.” He said, turning to leave. Jack suddenly was scared.

“Why not?” He called after the older boy, but getting no reply. He felt Rians hand on his shoulder, but he shrugged it off, and ran towards the park. His knees were beginning to feel weak, and he felt like he would just collapse. He ran across the street, pushing open the gate. He stopped to catch his breathe, and glanced around. There was nothing out of the ordinary, but he ventured further. He could hear Rian shouting to him, but he wanted to know what Zack was talking about.

After ten minutes of searching, he came to the conclusion that Zack was probably just fucking with him. He made his way back to the entrance, and as he was about to Exit he heard a low moan of pain coming from off the trail. He stepped into the brush, and searched for the source of the sound but found nothing. Although he couldn’t see who it was, the person saw him.

“Help me!” He heard the voice croak. He looked around, beginning to panic.

“Where are you. I can’t see you.” He said, his voice shaking.

“Behind you.” The voice weakly said. Jack turned around, and surprisingly enough he saw a person badly beaten, laying in a pool of there own blood. Jack ran over quickly, turning the person onto their back. He gasped in surprise, and then the blood rushed from his face.

“A-Alex, what happened?” He croaked.
