Tension's Like A Fire.

03

I should've ran out of the room and questioned Alex. My gut told me something wasn't right with that situation and I probably should take action. I was never the type to let myself look like a fool with guys. I took no shit from anyone, and always made it known to guys. Alex would've known that, being that he was my neighbor and I saw him more than I look at myself in the mirror. He wouldn't play this card with me, would he?

"Maybe he was just hooking up with her that night. You know how Alex is," I said, clearly making an excuse. I refused to believe Alex would treat me this way.

Cate blinked at me, dumbfounded. "Exactly, Quinn. We know how he is,"

I took a large gulp of beer, before shrugging. "If he decides to be an asshole, then I'll end it. End of story,"

She didn't say anything else about the situation that night. I ended up going home with her and sleeping over. We didn't bring it up, but instead forgot about it.

The next couple of weeks went by quickly. Alex's and I relationship didn't turn into a mushy love thing, but instead we felt like best friends. We acted the same way as we did when we were just neighbors. He came over a lot more though, as I went over there a lot more too. Our parents fell in love with the idea of childhood friends turned into a teen romance. All I heard the first week was 'I told you that Alex would come around!' or 'I knew you two would happen.' It annoyed both Alex and me, but we figured it would always come to this.

Cate grew to have an awkward relationship with Alex, but not in the 'We have a secret relationship know one knows about' (like in the movies) but 'Oh god I can't stand you.' Whenever they'd be over my house at the same time, they'd avoid each other, even if it meant eye contact.

It was the week before school started, and they were over. I had left my room to go get the pizza we had ordered, then I came back to my room.

"You can't tell her," I heard Alex say in a low voice. I pressed my ear against the door.

"And how come? She's my best-" Cate said in a louder voice.

"Shush! Not so loud," Alex scolded.

My mind was shut then. My relationship with Alex had been perfect so far. The secret- if there was one- could be anything. Right?

"I heard you and Alex talking," I spilled, unable to handle it anymore. It had been going through my mind for days then, and I didn't want to have to keep it in any longer.

Cate shifted uncomfortably in her desk, eyes still on the white board. School had started by then, we were in our 3rd day. We were in our Chemistry class, where we got to choose lab partners. It was obvious Cate and I picked each other. "What are you on about?" she muttered.

"Like a week ago, when we were all in my room playing Mario. Before I came in the room I heard Alex say you couldn't tell me something," I leaned in closer for a dramatic effect. I learned it in drama class. It intimidates the person apparently. "What is it, Cate?"

She looked at me with a pained expression. Her brows furrowed lightly, and her small mouth was in a frown. "I can't tell you." was all she said.

With her luck, the bell rang. She grabbed her stuff quickly, and booked it. I tried running after her, but instead ran into the chest of my boyfriend, who waited for me by all of my classes.

"You," I said, jabbing a finger in his face. The kids swarmed to their next class all around us. I stayed put until I got my answer.

"Yes. Me. Yes?" He raised a thick brow, staring my finger. He backed up a tad.

"You, sir, have a lot of explaining to do," I told him. He motioned for me to go on. "I heard you and Cate last week. What are you making her keep from me?"

"Uh..."

"Don't act stupid, Gaskarth. You know I won't deal with that," I warned him, hand on my hip.

He itched his neck. "You really cannot know," he said.

"Yes, I frickin' will know. You're not keeping things from me. Trey did, and look at him now. He stares at me from afar. Do you really want to be Trey, Alex?" I narrowed my eyes.

His lips twitched into a small smile. "No, I don't want to be Trey,"

"Then tell me." I demanded. I dropped my hand.

"You're going to be late. Which will make me late," he said, the smile becoming more nervous by the second.

"Whatever. Tell me."

"No-"

"No? Did I hear no? I will dump you so hard, you will stay in your bed for days, crying. And then you will become Trey," Did I feel like a bitch? Yes. But I was determined for the answer to this.

He narrowed his eyes this time, the smile gone. "Dump me then."

We stared each other down, not moving. I finally said, "It's over then. Have fun wallowing in self pity." I turned to leave but he grabbed my wrist.

"We were planning on having a surprise party, okay?" he said quickly. He bit his lip, and locked eyes with me.

My eyes traveled all over his face. "Really?"

"Yeah," he smiled, keeping it cool. "Of course. Your birthday is Saturday."

"I'll pretend I didn't know. I'm sorry, Alex," I said. I wasn't sorry. Mostly because I've seen him lie before to his parents. He bits his lip, and looks into the person's eye.Just like he did with me. I decided not to tell him I knew he was lying. He obviously wouldn't tell me the truth, so I knew I had to get to the bottom of it myself. I wasn't excited to see what was at the end of this, but what had to be done, was what was right.

Even if that meant heartbreak.
