I leave my footprints for the evidence

Sorry for leaving...without you.

I was at the bar still chatting up Jack and letting him in on everything that has happened since we parted ways, not about the baby though. “Paige Elizabeth,” My Aunt called from across the room. Turning in my seat Jack did the same. “You need to head on home now, you and… Jack?” She questioned but quickly walked over giving him a hug. “Oh, my gosh you’re so tall now and thin. How have you been?” She asked, bombarding him with questions. “I’m doing really well, and you?” He asked attempting to be polite. He spoke in slurred speech due to the multiple drinks we threw back since most the party left.

I was a giggling mess over here in my gown, which was pulled up and looked like I was wearing booty shorts, while I sat on the bar stool. “Other than Bob’s new condition and my worsening one I’m fine.” She looked over at me. “I’m glad to see that despite what happened you two could get along.” She said before coming over and giving me a hug. “Love you, sweet heart.” “L-love you too…” I said as she kissed my cheek and walked away. I stuttered cause she just assumed that I told Jack about Parker. “That was…” Jack looked at me. “What was she talking about?” “Nothin’, Don’t worry your little skunk head over it.” I said and slouched off the bar stool.

Slipping off my shoes I held them in my hand. “You know, I never got to dance.” He slurred at me. “Yeah but you know me, two left feet.” I said chuckling. Jack pulled out his phone loading Pandora real fast. He held out his hand. “Blink, may I have this dance?” I pulled my hands into my sides. “No, I don’t think so Jacky.” I said attempting to leave the room. “Come on, I’m sure the next song will be perfect.” He said grinning holding my arm. “Fine but if it’s not then no way.” He pulled me over closer to his phone and we waited until the next song came on.

“Alright, Antivist isn’t exactly the dancing type of song.” I said laughing. Jack threw back his head reaching for his phone. I grabbed his hand. “Jack,” He looked at me. “Just hit skip, you never know what’s gonna come on next.” I said giving up on the next song rule, I’d do anything to make him happy. He smiled and hit the button, after a stupid commercial with Adam West one of our favorite cliche songs came on. I miss you by none other than Blink 182, the band I got my nickname from. I stood up from the stools we were sitting on and held out my hand, he jumped up and took it in his own calloused fingers.

He rested his hand on my hip and I placed mine on his shoulder, our other hands occupied by the others. We spun around in a circle for a minute. “We’re not at a school dance, we can dance like normal people.” I whispered, not afraid just not wanting to ruin the moment. Jack pulled me closer into him and I leaned my head against his chest. We rocked back and forth listening to the song, I could hear Jack humming the word as vibrations went through his chest. I smiled and then the song ended. Not ready to give this up I gripped Jack’s hand a little tighter telling him one more song without opening my mouth. The next one to come on was Bruised by Jack’s Mannequin and for some reason Pandora was torturing me trying to get me to cry cause both these songs were sad.

“We stood like statues at the gate vacation's come and gone too late, there's so much sun where I'm from. I had to give it away, had to give you away” I sang quietly to what I thought was myself but Jack heard and continued. “Sometimes perfection can be It can be perfect hell, perfect…” Jack and I remained silent the rest of the song and once it was finished we pulled away from one another.”We should head home.” I said. It wasn’t until he nodded that I didn’t noticed I said Home, as if it was ours and I didn’t mind it, it didn’t feel like foreign thing. I picked back up my shoes and walk with Jack behind me towards the front door. Opening it I stepped out and looked over at my car. “Jack, I’m gonna call a cab. I shouldn’t drive.” I said and pulled out my phone pressing it to my ear. He only nodded.

After getting a cab I stood there looking down at my feet, trying not to look at Jack. We stood there in the dim porch light for a few minutes and I was now staring up at the stars, trying to find constellations. “I’m sorry,” Jack said out of no where. I looked at him seeing him look straight back. “Huh?” I asked. “I’m sorry.” He said again. “I’m sorry, I left,” I shook my head. “Jack, you needed to go and chase your dreams, just look at all the lives you help touch-” “Wait let me finish.” I nodded and crossed one of my arms across my body. “I’m sorry I left… you.” He stepped forward not breaking eye contact with me. A simple tear rolled down my cheek.

“I’m so sorry I left you, I should have gone with you or begged you to come with me. I was stupid,” I didn’t say anything so he took his warm hands and cupped my cheeks. “And now I’m too late, you’re with Vic and just… just know that as long as you’re happy, that I am too.” He smiled at me and I just stood there heart racing and all the blood rushing to my head making me dizzy. The cab pulled up and we got in. I didn’t say anything and I didn’t do anything other than sit, and attempt to pay when we reached my house but Jack wouldn’t let me.

I opened my door and all the lights were off considering it was almost 3 in the morning. I threw my shoes in the closet and dropped my keys in the bowl. Jack already headed up stairs to my room. I slowly trudged up stairs my breath still ragged. Instead of heading to my room I walked into Alana’s. I saw Alex asleep on one side of her bed and her on the other. I walked over and kneeled on her side. “A-alana.” I said in a low voice. She rolled over and sat on one elbow. “Paige?” She questioned rubbing one eye. I nodded as silent streams trudged their way down my face.

“What’s wrong?” She asked sliding down the side of the bed and pulling me into a hug. I let sobs rack my body and make up soak Alana’s shirt. She rubbed my back and shh’d me. “Honey, you gotta tell me what’s wrong.” “H-he said he was s-sorry, sorry he l-left me, sorry he didn’t a-ask me to come with him.” I cried on her shoulder. “Hey, it’s ok. You’ll be fine.” She said. I nodded as she pulled me up off the floor. “Come on, I’ll get you some clothes.” She said going to her dresser. I undid my dress and throwing it to one side of the room. She handed me the clothes and I pulled it on. Handing me a hair tie I pulled my hair into a bun.

She took my hand and pulled me down the steps to the living room. She sat me down on the couch as she pulled out tons of blankets from the linen closet and then popped in the Princess Bride. I sniffled and smiled as she placed the blankets on the floor then patted the spot next to her. I slunk down as she pushed play. Laying in front of her she crawled behind and pulled i=me into her body. “You’re the best.” I said quietly. “And you’re the strong one.” She said back. I smiled and continued to watch my favorite movie. We fell asleep shortly after.
