Forever Young

That Can't Be

Jack should be home today.

I wasn't sure when, we haven't exactly talked today. Or yesterday. Or the day before.

That's right, still haven't heard a word from Jack. I haven't tried calling him, or anyone else, because I felt like I didn't need to. He's the one who apparently had some chick with him. I was really starting to get kind of angry. At first I was hurt and confused, but gave him the benefit of the doubt, sure that he would call. However, since I haven't heard a peep, I'm sure something was wrong. Something had happened, and the jerk didn't have the balls to tell me.

I decided to just try my best to not think about how he might come home today. I felt a little more energetic, so I took Bailey out for a morning walk, which she was happy about. It was a weekend, so I figured we could walk towards downtown, maybe check out the local farmer's market place. They always had interesting things there, and I managed to spend too much tie and money there. Bailey was even exhausted by the time we got back.

When I peeked into the apartment, seeing no differences, I let out a sigh of relief. Bending down to release Bailey from her leash, I mumbled.

“That would have been awkward.”
“What would have awkward?”

I jumped at the sound of another voice and looked back at the still opened door. Jack was standing there, holding a suitcase and smiling a little. He cleared his throat and stepped in more shutting the door before looking at me.

“Umm, hey?”
“Hey?” I stood up. “That's all you have to say? Is hey?
“Ember, please...” He walked towards me, but I took a step back which caused him to falter in trying to get closer. “Look, I can explain.”
“Well I fucking hope so. Why haven't you called me back? Who was that girl on the phone? Did you do anything with her?” I asked, feeling all my built up frustrations come out in the forms of all the questions I had. “What the fuck happened?”
“She was just some slut Alex or Zack or whoever invited on the bus with a bunch of others. We didn't do anything I swear, you see she took my phone and hung on you and-”
“No shit.” I growled. “Why didn't you just call me back?”
“Cause, she basically started playing keep away with it, trying to get me to-”
“You couldn't just take it from her?” I asked, crossing my arms.
“She shoved it down her shirt!” Jack explained, desperately
“I don't care!” I snapped, but he continued.
“Then she dropped it and the battery came out and I told her to fuck off cause I wasn't going to do anything with her and she stepped on it and broke it and-”
“You could have used one of the guys phones.”
“Well, no, I couldn't cause-” I held up my hand, not wanting to hear anymore of this train wreck of a story.
“You seriously have an excuse for everything, don't you? Maybe you should lie better.”

I went to just walk away and wait for the truth, but Jack's arms appeared, pulling me back towards him in tight embrace.

“Just listen, please, baby.” He begged in my ear, and I tried tugging his arms off.
“I don't want to hear your excuses.”
“It's not an excuse, I swear. You can even call the guys and confirm it all if you don't believe me by the end of it.”
“And how do I know Alex wouldn't be in on it?” I asked, giving up on getting free from him. It was no use.
“Call Matt.” He answered simply. I sulked for a few moments before muttering out.
“Fine.”

“Okay, so she broke my phone and I was really pissed off cause I had been looking forward to talking to you and this random bitch ruins that and makes it looks like I'm cheating. The next thing I know, I shoved her, and she had a scrape and a bruise and calls the cops and wins the stupid argument landing me in jail for a day until everything got sorted out. I barely made it to the next show to play and I figured it was too late to explain all this over the phone on someone else's phone cause you and I both no that instead of trying to walk away from me, you'd have to resort to hanging up and telling me not to come home.”

We stood there for a moment. I was processing everything I heard, and Jack was waiting for my reaction. After a bit, I broke out of his hold, well....he let me and looked at him.

“You were in jail?” I asked.
“Yes.”
“Because you pushed this girl.”
“Yes...”
“Do you expect me to believe that?!” I asked, outraged. “Why didn't anyone called me?”
“It's a really messed up and complicated thing, I know, but please just-”
“Shut up.” I screeched. “I don't believe any of this.”
“Come on, just call Matt.”
“I don't need to call Matt to know this is a bunch of bullshit.”
“Ember...” Jack sighed.
“Don you 'Ember' me, why did you even come home?”
“To explain this!” He said, throwing his hands up in the air. “Please, just call Matt. I swear, I'm not lying.”

I looked over Jack, taking in how desperate he looked and the clear show of sincerity in his eyes. With an eye roll, I dug my phone out of my pocket and dialed Matt's number. It rang for a little bit before finally...

“Hello?”
“Matt.”
“Oh, you sound serious.” He said, laughing nervously. “I'm guessing Jack's home?”
“Mmhm.” I said, still staring at a now restless Jack who was bouncing on his feet.
“And he told you everything right?”
“Yep.”
“Well, I can confirm it's true.” I blinked and looked away from Jack.
“Seriously?”
“Yeah, I have the documents here and everything.”
“You swear.”
“I swear on my Mickey Mouse collection, and so help me if I'm lying you can burn them all.”
“Every one?”
“Every single one.”
“....okay.”

With that, we both hung up and Jack bit his lip before speaking.

“So....believe me?”
“I guess I have to.” I sighed. “But if you-”

I was going to say something about if this ever happened again I would fly out to murder him, but Jack was quick to gather m back up into his arms and lean down to kiss me. As mad as I was or kind was, I couldn't deny how much I missed this for the last few weeks. Kissing him back, my hands moved to lock behind his neck pulling him closer before we pulled away a little. Jack kept his forehead rested against mine as he smiled.

“God, I missed you and your temper.” He mumbled, and I gave him a half-hearted smack upside the head.

“I missed you too, you idiot.” I smiled, leaning up to kiss him again.

Jack happily kissed back until I felt a weird flutter in my stomach, almost like I swallowed a butterfly. Gasping, I pulled away, which only made Jack look at me worriedly as I ran a hand over my belly.

“What is it? Are you in pain?”
“No...that's not it.” I said, a little shocked.
“What's wrong then?”

“The baby moved!”
