Forever Young

Nothing

It's not what you think ,I swear.” Jack's voice said desperately, while I started to feel that familiar heart break of when I first found out about Bri. “Ember, please just listen.”
“Jack, just hang up on her, babe.”
I heard the feminine voice from before say.
“I'll just leave you alone then.” I mumbled, ready to hang up.
“Get the fuck off me!” Jack yelled, and I heard some shuffling. “Ember, please, we're not doing anything. The guys brought some chicks on the bus, and I came- What are you- No!”
“I'm sorry, Jack has a party to return to. A private one.”
The chick said and the line went dead.

I attempted to call back, but after three times there was no answer. Giving up, I laid down in bed unsure of what to think. Jack wouldn't cheat, would he? It is the first time we've been away from each other for awhile....maybe... No no, he wouldn't do that. We've been great, especially now that this baby thing is sorted out better. He...he didn't sound like he was enjoying anything the girl was doing or saying. Yet...he hasn't called back or answered.

Groaning, I sat up ready to call again. Once I got the phone unlocked though, I just put it back down.

He would call.

Right?
Waking up the next morning, I was shocked that I even fell asleep. I was waiting for Jack to call me back and explain. Sitting up, I scrambled around my bed til I finally found my phone and checked it. It wasn't dead. There was no calls or texts. What the hell happened?

Putting it on the charger so Jack can contact me later if he wants, I got up and decided to shower and get ready for the day. I needed to get my mind off what happened last night. My morning routine was a little different these days. I took vitamins in the morning for the baby, I was supposed to keep track of my weight and today was a weighing day. I always stared at my belly or a bit, especially lately. They say you're supposed to feel movement around this time. I was about twenty weeks in, and yet nothing so far.

“Are you shy or something?” I asked my stomach, resting a hand over it. Babies can here you in the womb...maybe that will make it move. “Come on, I just wanna make sure you're alive in there.”

I waited a few more moments of nothing before sighing and just undressing completely to hop in the shower. My legs were already starting to cramp up often these days, plus I get dizzy easily usually in the first half of the day so I hurried through the shower so I don't over work it too much. When I went back to the room to get dressed, my phone still had no notifications and I knew exactly how this was going to go. I wasn't going to hear from him at all till late probably...

Once I was dressed, I decided to phone Joyce to see if she wanted breakfast. I was craving Denny's for some reason.

“Hey, darling.” She answered happily. “Everything okay?”
“Yeah, I just woke up about an hour ago and-”
“What are you craving?” She asked immediately, laughing.
“Denny's.” I whined, “Please?”
“Sounds good, you're father didn't go to work today. Should I invite him along?”
“Yeah, sounds like a plan.” I nodded, patting the couch when I saw Bailey finally come down the stairs after me. Of course she hopped right on and placed her head in my lap.
“Meet you there in say... half an hour?” Joyce offered.
“Mhm, thanks Joyce.” I smiled, petting my dog.
“Anytime!”

I had some time to kill, so I fed Bailey quickly and pulled up my laptop. Checking some emails, I found a few from Mickey, of course that idiot was up late in England last night, all having to do with things he wanted second opinions on and help with financial issues. Apparently there was about thirty to forty dollars from the booth sales. Sighing, I quickly thought of all the possibilities for that and wrote them down, for maybe the third time, and added some other things like while Vinny was on break, someone could have put twenties in the wrong place.

Soon enough I was walking into Denny's smelling greasy food that made my mouth water now instead of making my stomach churn. I looked around and found Joyce and my dad already seated and waving at me. Smiling, I went over and took a seat across from them.

“Hey guys.”
“Hello, dear.” Joyce said.
“How's everything?” My dad asked, and I shrugged.
“It's alright. There's only so much you can do home alone and pregnant.”
“Well, won't Jack be coming home in a few days?” Joyce asked, trying to be helpful but a frowned.
“Yeah, I guess...”
“Uh-oh,” My dad spoke up. “Are you two having troubles?”
“It's nothing, don't worry.” I faked a smile, but they didn't look convinced.

Of course, Joyce and Dad know a lot of what happened way long ago. Minus a few details Jack and I decided were better off under the rug for them. So, whenever we had a spat once in awhile, our parents were quick to try and figure out what's going on. They seemed to get that I didn't want to elaborate now though and we switched the subject.

I asked them how they were doing, seeing as though they decided to move into a smaller house. I wish I could have helped them out in packing, but they always insisted that their friends' help was enough. Joyce asked me how I've been feeling, and I told her I get headaches frequently, which of course she assured was normal. Why was pregnancy so annoying at times?

When we ate and parted ways, I decided to head to the store instead of straight home. I really didn't feel like sitting around today. Plus, Jack's coming home soon I wanted to make a nice dinner that day.

The thought of Jack made me frown. It was about noon here, which mean is was sixish in the evening there. They'd probably be busy right about now, I know there's a show today. As tempted as I am to call Matt or someone, I decided against it. There's always tonight to wait for some kind of call.

By the time I got home, I was hungry again and figured that it had to be around ten o'clock there. Which meant Jack could call me soon enough. The moment I got home, I turned my laptop on, signed into skype, and made sure my phone's ringer was all the way up. Taking the laptop into the kitchen with me, I refilled Bailey's bowl, promising we'll go on a walk in a couple hours and got to work in make myself something to eat.

An hour went by, and I was finishing up my food. No call, and no one was on Skype. When two hours went by, I was getting restless and Bailey was pacing in front of the door. So, I grabbed her leash and took my phone changing my status on Skype to 'away.' We were gone for another hour and a half, since I took her to a park where she could run around while I sat. Bailey needed the energy let out anyway. It was now 8:30ish here and all I wanted to do was pass out, feeling like they're were all out by now on the side of the world where it was 2:30ish in the morning. I grabbed my computer, and headed up to the bedroom.

After what felt like ages I was under the blankets, t.v. off, pjs on, and laptop running beside me. There really was no hope from hearing from Jack I guess. I had my phone and skype on forever. It was time to just give up and hope I hear from Jack before he comes home.

If he does.

Notes

Hmm, something tells me Ember forgot something that might be a reason Jack didn't contact her.....dun dun duun
