Forever Young

Heartbeat

Finally, the time had come for Ember to visit the OB again. It was weird to think that she'd be seeing someone different every time, when I'd read that most girls like to pick one and stick with them. It makes them more comfortable about the care of the baby, or something, but Ember didn't seem to mind our current set up. Besides, the only way she could see one single doctor was if she went home.. Without me.

I was sitting in the exam room, waiting for Ember to fill up a cup and read over some papers, just taking in everything around me. This room was a lot different from the one we'd been in before. There weren't as many posters in the room and it was a lot smaller than the other one. Still, I couldn't complain. At least they agreed to see Ember on such short notice.

Ember opened the door, catching my attention, and slipped in with a small smile on her face. I noticed she had a band-aid on her arm and cocked my brow at her.

"They wanted some blood work," she shrugged, sliding onto the exam table. "Apparently they have a lab they take it in."

"At least we won't be here again," I smiled, not liking the idea that they couldn't come to her to take her blood. "When will the doctor be in?"

"Shouldn't be long."

As if by clock work, the door slowly opened and in stepped a short man with glasses and messy dark hair. He extended his hand to both of us and introduced himself as Dr. Mitch.
He laid Ember back on the bed and set straight to work. It was pretty obvious they don't waste any time around here. He pulled up her shirt and poked her at her belly, feeling around and asking if anything hurt. When she said nothing bothered her, he sat her back up.

"Everything seems good, then. We'll get those blood and urine results back to you as soon as we can. You can see yourselves out."

"Wait," I stood up before I could even stop myself, "what about the ultrasound? Doesn't she get one?"

"We have another building for those. Unless it's an emergency, I can't help you."

"But the only reason we agreed to come here was so we could see the baby. We're on tour. We don't get the chance to go to the OB often."

"Perhaps you should make more time. Things can change suddenly. Besides, after she's around fifteen to twenty weeks, you won't be getting more ultrasounds unless she's high-risk, to such an extent that someone thinks it will damage the growth of the baby. You only get to have the first kid feeling once," he turned to Ember, his face soft. "You should enjoy it more often."

Ember glanced away from him, as if his words had hit a spot. I didn't really understand what the first kid feeling was, but maybe Ember did.

"Just this once I'll let it pass. Lay back, push your pants down some and pull your shirt up. Someone will be right in."

I moved across the floor so that I was beside Ember. My hand gripped hers as she tucked her shirt into her bra and wiggled her pants down (as best she could with one hand) so that her hips were showing more than before. We stayed quiet until the door opened and a tech walked in, pushing a machine with them. She sat down beside Ember and dumped what appeared to be gunk all over her stomach. Ember hissed at how cold it was but adjusted quickly.

From there, a wand was pulled off of the side of the machine and the tech tilted the screen so that we could see what she was doing. She placed the wand to Ember's belly and started pressing down on her stomach, while moving the wand around.

Slowly, the peanut came into view and I felt my heart skip a beat.

"Wanna hear it?"

Gulping, I nodded my head slowly. A moment passed and then a loud thudding noise flew through the room. It was like a little helicopter, only it was coming from Ember's wound. The sound of our little peanut's heartbeat. No sound had ever been more beautiful, or taken such an emotional toll on me. Tears filled my eyes as a smile came to my face.

Life was definitely going t be different from here on out.. But I couldn't ask for anything better.
