I'll Paint You Wings

I smiled as I saw Alex turn the corner that led him to the station. Noticing I was shivering, I jogged back into the house, door clicking shut quietly so the bang of the door doesn't shake the walls and possibly hit Lexi's crib and wake her up.

When I walked past her room, I peeked my head inside and smiled when she had her white pacifier with a fire engine printed on the handle. Alex didn't care if it was for boys hen he bought it. He only cared that it had a fire engine on it claiming, "She's gonna have to learn to like them, anyways."

She was also placed in a swaddling bed that had little arms that kept her snug and vibrated.

I sighed and leaned over her crib to kiss her tiny forehead whispering, "I love you, sweetie." before turning on her baby monitor and walking out of the room.

It was kind of nice that Alex and I didn't have to be as quiet as we would have if Lexi wasn't deaf, I just didn't like the idea of kinda rubbing it in her face if that makes sense.

I curled up into a ball under the covers and watched the last few minuets of Jack Frost before deciding a few more hours of sleep wouldn't hurt since I'd be watching Lexi all on my own all day.

I woke up to the sound of tiny whimpers coming from the baby monitor. Lexi wasn't much of a crier, but by god her grunts and whimpers could break your heart just as bad as her actual cries.

I pulled on a pair of sweat pants, not bothering with a shirt as I made the short walk down the hall to go get Lexi.

I couldn't help the laugh that escaped when I saw she somehow flipped onto her side and got stuck in the pillow, pacifier no longer in her mouth but on the side of her face.

I shook my head as I scooped her up into my arms, pacifier falling off in the process, "You okay?" I asked softly, hand coming up to wipe a few stray tears away.

Lexi just gave me a tiny whimper as her head flew off to the side, jerking around slightly.

"I'll take hat as a kinda." I laughed as I pulled my phone from my pocket seeing it was 9:30 Christmas morning.

"Merry Christmas, baby!" I cheered with a over dramatic smile on my face, grabbing her hand and kissing it gently.

She smiled, eyes glistening and I couldn't help but smile back and kiss her forehead again and again.

My phone interupted my kissing spree, alerting me that I had to feel Lexi so I walked into the kitchen, making spinning here and there until I sat her down in her carrier that doubled as a car seat.

After strapping her in, I made my way over to the fridge and pulled out a pre made bottle. After I shook it when it was done warming it in the microwave, I had Lexi back in my arms, quietly humming against her hand as she drank the formula peacefully.

I burped her when she was done (only having to wipe off a bit of smelly formula puke off my shoulder) then strapping her back into the seat as I made my own breakfast.

Giving Lexi a bath was an experience. She didn't take well to being alone i the tub with me hovering over her so I decided to strip and get in the tub with her.

The water was colder than I am used to since she's a baby and can't really deal with hot water.

She calmed down considerably when I placed her on my thighs so she was facing me as I worked baby shampoo into what little brown hair she had. I then used the left over suds to wash her body.

I took caution of rinsing her with a cup so I wouldn't get any soap in her eyes cause no matter how much you tell me the bottle says "No tears!", It burns so there's going to be some tears.

I pulled the plug and carefully stepped out of the tub and swaddled her in one of the hoodie towels that Matt gave us. It had Minnie Mouse ears on the hood and a tiny black tail on the bottom of the towel. Needless to say, she looked fucking adorable.

I don't know how I did it but I wrapped myself in a towel also.

We both got dressed, me wearing a pair of Alex's black skinny jeans and my red plaid button up. I quickly got Lexi in a fresh diaper and then dressed her in a red and white candy cane themed onesie.

I hovered over her in Alex's and I's bed smiling down on her, "What should we do today, hm? You wanna go see daddy?!"

All of this was said on her hands, cheeks and tummy as I tried to get her accustomed to being talked to.

Lexi blew a spit bubble before her hand came up to rest on my scarred cheek. I bit my lip and slowly moved her tiny hand away from my face and kissed it.

"I love you, cutie. Let's go see daddy." I said softly, not even bothering to say it against her body.

I noticed I had no ride to the station so I called Matt and he gave Lexi and I a ride.

"Do I just go in?" I asked as I tried to shield the snow from Lexi's carrier.

Matt nodded, "Front entrance is the best."

"Thanks Matt. Merry Christmas." I said, waving my hand.

"Merry Christmas." He laughed as he pulled out of the station parking lot.

I jogged quickly to the front door to save us from the cold. I heard lots of talking as I opened it, already being greeted by scrams and shouts of my name.

"Jack! What're you doin' here?" Rian shouted as he ran up to me and hugged me.

I sat down Lexi's carrier and welcomed the rest of the hugs I was receiving.

"Came to surprise Alex." I laughed..

"Is she awake?" Zack asked with a bright smile, pointing to Lexi.

"She should be." I shrugged as I pulled off the blanket to show Lexi sucking on her fingers.

"She's so cute!" Zack squealed as he leaned down to rub her foot with his thumb.

"I can't either," I sighed. "Anyways, where's Alex?"

Rian laughed, "In his room sleeping."

"Thanks." I smiled and nodded my head as I leaned down to unbuckle Lexi from her seat and gently cradled her into my arms.

"Ready to go see daddy?" I asked as I kissed her small forehead.

I blushed as half the station cooed at my words.

"Jack, why do you talk to her like that when she can't hear you?" One of Alex's coworkers asked.

"I just do," I shrugged. "I always feel bad if I don't talk to her."

I started to walk down the long hallway till I got to his and Matt's shared room. I didn't bother knocking as I pushed open the wooden door and poked my head in. I couldn't help but aw when I saw tufts of his hair splayed out from under the covers onto his pillow.

Lexi whimpered as I entered the dark room, the only form of light being from the cracked door of the bathroom and the stray rays of sunlight of the window peaking through.

I had to sush Lex quietly with my finger as I walked up to my husbands small bed.

"Alex?" I said softly, hand coming down to smooth out his hair with the hand that wasn't holding Lexi.

He stirred a little in his sleep, eyelids moving softly.

"Alex, baby. Wake up." I said a little louder this time.

"J-Jack?" Alex croaked, voice heavy with sleep.

"Yes, baby. I'm here. So is Lexi."

Alex's lips turned up into a smile at Lexi's name, eyes opening slowly.

"Merry Christmas, Alex." I beamed as I sat on the edge of the bed.

Alex sat up against the metal frame and rubbed the sleep from his eyes, "Merry Christmas, baby."

"How was the call this morning?" I asked as Alex made grabby hands for our daughter, cradling her into his chest. I couldn't help how my heart fluttered at how she just seemed to mold into his hold, almost like she belonged in his arms. He's going to be the best daddy ever.

"Oh, it was nothing special." Alex shrugged as he bent down to kiss Lexi's nose.

"Really?" I laughed as I rested my chin on my palm.

"Oh, yeah." Alex assured as he lifted Lexi above him and lightly swayed her around making airplane noises.

I didn't reply, just smiled as I kept my eyes on how Alex was interacting with Lexi who was getting a kick out of all the faces he was making.

"Oh, in three weeks she'll be two months old so we need to take her to that doctor." Alex said softly as he was rubbing his thumbs over Lexi's ears. She lightly twitched but otherwise kept quiet.

"Man, it doesn't seem like she'll be two months. She's so tiny." I whimpered as my fingers played with the hairs on the nape of Alex's neck.

Alex hummed in content, "Yeah, I know."

"I wish you could be home." I pouted.

"I know, I do too." Alex sighed , fingers drawing patters on Lexi's small cheek.

I sighed and curled into his side, softly kissing his shoulder.

"Lex?" I asked timidly.

Alex hummed and looked towards me briefly before averting his attention back to Lexi.

I stalled for a few seconds by playing with the small strands on the blanket that were coming loose, trying to get rid of the lump forming in my throat.

"Are you- are you going back to being a full time firemen?" I whispered, tears rimming my eyes.

Alex's movements stopped as he sighed, "Yeah, babe. After today i'm going back to it. Today I was just covering for Matt. I'll still be home though." He said softly, head leaning over to nudge mine.

"That's not the problem." I mumbled.

"Then what is it?" Alex pushed, eyes glued to me this time.

"I'm scared." I whispered.

"Why, darling?" Alex whispered back, nose nudging against mine, kissing me quickly.

"I just- Please don't die."

So sorry about the ending? I'm evil. My brother is still living with us and we're spending a lot more time together and it's amazing :)
