So Long Soldier

Chapter 1.

I pulled my jacket tighter around me as it started to snow lightly. I hurried down the icy sidewalk and around the corner as quickly as I could. I swore as I lost my footing, nearly colliding with someone. Strong arms caught me before I landed arse first on the cold ground. I straightened myself up quickly.
"Oh my God thank you!" I said to the guy standing before me. "Thank you so much!"
"Are you okay?" He asked, his brown eyes meeting my deep blue ones.
"I'm fine, thank you!" I repeated again with an apologetic smile and rushed off towards Starbucks where my shift had started 15 minutes ago.

"I'm here, I'm here!" I called as I ran through the kitchen, hung my jacket up, put my apron on and tied my long brown hair into a high ponytail. I took my place at the counter and started taking the orders that were flowing through. I should have know it was to be busy. Business workers and snow equal countless orders of coffee.

After a fair few people, a guy wearing a grey beanie was next. I could have sworn I knew him, then blushed as I stupidly realised who he was.
"Hi what can I get for you this morning?" I said politely with a slight smile.
"I understand now why you were in a rush, to take my coffee order," he said cheekily. He was cute, I had to admit.
I laughed hurriedly. "Okay okay, can I take your order now?" I looked behind him at the impatient people in suits. "There's a lot of people behind you..." I said in a low voice.
He looked back. "Yeah... They can wait."
"Seriously. I'll even pay for it seeing as you saved me from landing on my arse."
He nodded as he considered my proposition. "Maybe... What time do you finish?"
I sighed and shook my head slightly. "What would you like?"
He bit his lip. "A regular latté please." I scribbled on a cup.
"And your name?"
"Alex," he said softly as I took the coins from him. He smiled at me sweetly before wandering over to a seat to wait for his order. Under his name I wrote 'Finish at 12'.
I served a few more people and heard Alex's name called to collect his order. I glanced over at him as he smirked and read what I had writted on the cup.

By the time I got out of work I had almost completely forgotten about Alex. Morning shifts were not in my good books. I slid on my jacket and wandered outside, only to be met by the familiar brown eyes.
"Alex, hi," I said as a smile crept across my face.
"Yeah you know my name, but I don't know yours..."
I laughed a little. "Nebraska."
"Well then Nebraska, you owe me a coffee if I'm not mistaken?"
I laughed. "Alright then..."

-

"So what do you do besides working at Starbucks?" He asked as we walked side by side down the empty streets. Filled with hot coffee we were warm enough to brave the icy cold air outside.
"Nothing really. I like to sing." Alex looked down at me questioningly. "I'm no good though."
"I'm sure you are."
"Not like you."
He looked at his feet and nodded. "You knew?"
"My little brother listens to All Time Low." My smiled a bit but it faded and I tried to hide it. "I don't see him much."
"I don't see mine much either," Alex said softly.
I looked up at him. "I'm sorry."
"It's fine, really," he said, the corner of his lips turning up slightly. I returned it with a small smile.
"Well, this is me." I gestured to the block of boring brick apartments behind where we stood. "Thanks for walking me home."
"Any time. I'll see you 'round, Nebraska."
"Stay excellent," I called back as I walked up the steps and into the building.

Comments

So I just read what you have of this story and I really like it so far. I'm bummed to see it was never completed or continued, though. :(
Alex and Nebraska's relationship is so sweet and I just love them together. I think that's a really unique name for a main character as well.
If you ever choose to pick this up again and finish it, I will be here to read. Wanted to leave a comment to let you know that. I think you're a really great writer, and think this story deserves an ending if you can ever find yourself writing for it again. :)
