Sit Back, Gotta Catch My Breath

Six Feet Under The Stars

I've been home for about an hour, just chilling in my room, laying on my bed and strumming random chords on my acoustic.Today was just shitty all around. I got lost twice, people stared at me wherever I went, and I got pushed against the lockers and punched in my right cheek. I put ice on it when I first got home, and the swelling went down a little bit, but it still had a slight purple tinge to it. They wouldn't tell me why they did it. They just laughed and walked away while I picked up my things off the dirty hallway floor.
I shook my head to myself. Whoever said change was a good thing was fucking wrong. And I couldn't go visit my brother, because, well, his grave was in Essex.
You're probably like, "Wait, what? Grave?"
Well, yeah. See... my brother kind of... killed himself two years ago. His name was Tom, and he was really the only person that I could go to with my problems.
Now I have no one.
I shook the depressing thoughts out of my head and continued to strum my guitar as I gazed off into nothing. That is, until there was a knock on my door. "Alex, dinner's ready. Wash up and head on down!"
I glanced over at my clock. It was 5:30. Maybe I had been home longer than I thought. I sighed deeply and placed my guitar on it's stand next to the head of my bed and headed to the bathroom to wash my hands. When I looked in the mirror, I cringed at what I saw. The bruise was worse than I thought. I flicked my fringe down and discovered that it covered it up enough where you wouldn't see it at a quick glance. I washed my hands and slumped downstairs and to the dining room table where my plate was already waiting for me. I looked at my parents through my fringe. "May I eat in my room, tonight?"
My mum looked up from her plate and my dad from his newspaper. They both nodded slowly and returned to what they were doing. I grabbed my plate and jogged back upstairs and to my room. I shut the door behind me and sighed as I looked at the plate. They gave me way too much food. There was no way I was going to eat all of this. I shook my head and placed the plate on the top of my dresser before returning to my bed. I crossed my legs and stared out my window at the darkening world. I bit my lip and looked at my bare feet, and then back outside.
I sighed deeply and pulled on my socks and combat boots, and then my hoodie. I fixed my beanie and returned downstairs and headed toward the front door. "I'm going for a walk!" I shouted to the dining room.
"You're finished eating already?" I heard my mum reply.
"Yeah."
I heard her sigh. "Alright, darling. Just don't be out too late."
And with that, I was out the door and headed down my street. I had no idea where I was going, but I just needed to get out for a little bit. I pulled up my hood and shoved my hands into my pockets as the chilly air wrapped around me. I shivered slightly and exhaled a deep breath, trying to focus on keeping warm.
Seriously, has no one told Mother Nature how August is supposed to be, yet?
I halted as I looked around. I was standing at the end of a slightly-hidden thin dirt path that lead into the woods. I looked both ways before squeezing through the bushes and fallen limbs and began down the this path. After about five minutes of walking, I arrived at a park that seemed as if it hadn't been visited in forever. I tested one of the swings before sitting down in it. I began to swing back and forward leaving my mind blank. I really didn't want to be thinking about today's events.
Before I knew it, it was pitch black outside and I couldn't see and inch in front of my nose. I guess that since people stopped visiting this park, they didn't bother to change the light bulbs in the lamps.I just sat there in pure darkness for a few more minutes. Before deciding to head back home. As I squeezed back through the bushes and onto the sidewalk, I bumped into someone. I looked up at the tall man and bit my lip. The dim light from the street lamps lit some of his features as he looked back down at me. I could feel my face get hot with embarrassment and looked down at my shoes. "S-sorry," I said.
"It's no problem," he replied, turning around and continued in the way he had been headed before the collision. I nodded to myself and headed back home, deciding that it seemed like a good time to call it a day and go to bed.

Notes
