Misery Business

Since finding out about Victoria and Alex’s night at the bar, Jack became intent on wanting them back together. They had talked things out and even went out for a drink together―things were going just smoothly. Jack could only predict the results when they actually got together again. The expectations made him giddy. Finally, things would return to how they were when they were young.

As for Victoria, she had made up for the time she ditched Lisa’s “girls day” plans by hanging out with her the whole week. She even attended a movie with her at her work. It was nice to have a girl best friend, even though Lisa and Victoria were strangely opposite. But they had fun together and agreed on most things.

It was a Friday afternoon that Victoria sat on Lisa’s couch, flipping through different movies they could get On Demand. Lisa stood in the kitchen, deciding which popcorn they should eat with the movie. “Kettle or butter?” She called out to Victoria.

“Definitely kettle,” Victoria grinned. “Hey, have you seen Captain America yet?”

“I’ve been dying to watch that with someone!” She shrieked with happiness from the kitchen. “Sadly, my boyfriend only likes Iron Man and said the Captain America movie was bad.”

Victoria snorted. “Your boyfriend doesn’t know shit.”

“That’s an understatement.” Lisa chuckled as she watched the popcorn pop in the microwave.

Victoria pressed play on the movie and the regular opening for Marvel started on the TV screen. She heard Lisa’s apartment door open and slam shut, causing Victoria to become confused. She heard the sounds of feet in the kitchen, and then a “Hi, baby” from Lisa. Despite the knowing that it was probably Lisa’s boyfriend, Victoria let her curiosity get the best of her and she slowly padded to the kitchen.

Standing in the kitchen was Lisa and Alex. Victoria stood staring at them in shock. Lisa looked over to her, smiling. And that was when it all clicked. That first time she saw Lisa in the elevator, and she wondered where she’d seen her―the tabloids. Victoria had probably seen pictures a few times Kerrang! or Alternative Press got of her and Alex. How did she not notice before?

The stare between Alex and Victoria seemed to last forever, that was until Lisa said, “Victoria, this is my boyfriend, Alex. Alex, this is Victoria. She lives upstairs.”

Victoria was about to introduce herself like Alex was a complete stranger, but he did something to surprise them both.

“Actually, I’ve already met Victoria in the elevator. She went to the bar with me a week ago.” He smiled Lisa’s way.

“Oh,” she beamed, “well, that’s better news!”

“It’s nice seeing you again, Alex.” Victoria fake-smiled, and it was clearly visible to him.

“The feeling is mutual, Ham―” He stopped himself. “―Victoria.”

She wished he had said her last name, to hear the old nickname return to his lips once again. But she knew it wouldn’t. She was torturing herself.

“We were just about to watch Captain America if you want to join us?” Victoria asked, trying her best to hide the jealously that coursed through her veins at the sight of Alex holding Lisa like he used to with her.

She knew Lisa was her friend, but while looking at the scene before her now, she wanted to wring her neck out.

Alex looked from the nodding Lisa to Victoria. “Why not?”

“Yay!” Lisa cheered, clapping her hands. She then swooped Victoria by her arm and pulled her into an unexpected group hug with her and Alex. “It’s so great to see my two best friends getting along!”

Alex and Victoria’s eyes met, holding the same sad expression in them. “Best friends,” Alex breathed out.

“Woo,” Victoria softly cheered.

And if you supposed that hug was awkward, well, you should’ve seen the sight of Alex and Lisa cuddling during the movie while Victoria watched at the end of the sofa. She was screwed over.
