Miss Missing You

Chapter inspiration: Miss Missing You – Fall Out Boy

Victoria let the bitter but sweet liquid run down her throat as she wiped the trickle from her mouth off with her sleeve. Jack did the same, looking at her while she ran her fingers up and down her beer. They were lucky they got to the bar early, because already the place was filling up with the nuts who usually came around this time. But Jack didn’t just take her here to get drunk―even though that would surely help them both―she needed talking.

“‘Tides will bring me back to you,’ he said.” She took another swig. “What a load of fucking shit.”

Jack wasn’t the best on consoling sad and heartbroken girls. He usually just fucked them to make them feel better, but Victoria was a whole different situation. So he did his best and patted her shoulder.

“I just don’t understand,” she shook her head. “It only been seven years! Am I that forgettable? Do I really look like different?”

“Well, your hair is longer and a bit darker than it was before. Plus, you have a nose ring.” He looked her up and down on the stool. “Oh, and don’t forget that your rack got bigger.”

She glanced at him with narrowed eyes. “It’s sad that I’m used to that.”

He only grinned, making her do the same. He got her to smile, this was good. “And you’re not forgettable. I mean, look at all the hangovers I’ve had not remembering things, and I still managed to remember you.”

She gave him a small smile, and then looked back down at her beer. “I just miss him.”

“We all kind of miss him.”

Victoria looked at him confusingly. “What do you mean?”

“He’s been … wrapped up in things other than the band.” He wanted to tell her about Lisa, but he didn’t have the heart too. He understood how much Victoria missed Alex, but he just couldn’t break her heart more by telling her he had moved on.

“I just can’t believe this …” She looked away, sighing. “He asked me what my fucking name was. I know that I look a little different, but …” Her voice trailed off and she scoffed under her breath.

“People change” were the only words Jack could use to comfort her. “I mean, look at me. I’m hell of a lot better looking now than I was in senior year!”

She chuckled. “That is where you are right, my friend.” She then leaned her head on her beer bottle, staring at him with such joy and interest as a little kid in a candy shop. “I missed you.”

He hugged her shoulders close to his and planted a kiss on her forehead. “Hey, at least I didn’t forget about you.”

She wanted to say that that was all that mattered to her. That Jack remembering her was all she cared about. But she would’ve been lying to herself. Jack had made her feel a little bit better by their chat, but it didn’t mask her feelings that her first love forgot who she was.

He was the only person she wanted to remember her.
