Strayed Hearts

Chapter inspiration: Stray Heart – Green Day

Victoria was surprised Jack didn’t invite more than the usual gang on Saturday. It gave her some sort of relief knowing her apartment would only get―she guessed―partly trashed. But she did see a couple of new faces, and by new she meant she hadn’t seen them in so long.

“Vic!” Rian exclaimed at the sight of her. “I’ve been waiting to come down and see you!” He pulled her into a big hug.

“You too, Ri.” She laughed as she then embraced Zack.

“You look different.” The quiet boy smiled to her.

“A nose ring can do wonders, my friend.” She said, making them laugh.

Victoria spotted an unfamiliar face behind Rian, and the girl smiled brightly as he pulled her over. “Victoria, this is my girlfriend, Cassadee.”

Victoria was surprised when Cassadee brought her into a hug. “I’ve heard so much about you.” She smiled warmly.

“I hope it’s good.” Victoria laughed, trying to make small talk―something she was not very good at.

Cassadee chuckled softly as Rian walked with her to the kitchen for a drink. That left only Victoria and Zack. He glanced at her awkwardly, muttering, “So the living arrangements with Jack haven’t tired you yet?”

She looked over to where Jack was pouring a drink for Rian. “Not as much as you think.” She looked down at the drink in her cup and took a sip. “He got me to continue something I never thought I’d do again.” To that, she was referring to her sketching, but she guessed Zack would never know.

Zack nodded. “That’s surprising. Alex just wanted to know.”

Her eyes instantly flickered to Zack’s. “Alex?”

Realizing that he probably shouldn’t have mentioned him, Zack tried to recover. “Yeah, he just … didn’t want to seem nosy.”

“Of course,” she smiled falsely and nodded. The knocking on the door saved her from any more small talk. “I’ll be right back.”

She sprinted and opened the door. Speaking of the devil, she thought to herself as she stared at the lonesome Alex. She looked to the empty spot beside him. “Where’s Lisa?”

“As much as I love your enthusiasm to see me,” he grinned and walked through the doorway, “she had other plans with friends.”

“Oh,” Victoria muttered as she walked with him into the crowded living room.

He turned to her. “I guess it’s just us two musketeers.”

“And a couple more people,” she added, her eyes glancing to Zack’s across the room, who was raising his brow at her.

“Just like old times.” He beamed, walking away to the kitchen and cracking open a beer.

---

As the hours passed by, the beers passed more. By the time of two AM, the crowd was pretty much gone. Jack had even passed out in his room. They would sure all have a hangover the next morning. The apartment seemed so quiet, except for the little whispers passed between two former lovers.

Alex and Victoria sat next to the couch on the ground, giggling through their dizzy and drunken thoughts. It felt like déjà vu: laying around with each other as they sucked down the rest of the booze. Victoria missed this; she could feel the years of high school return to her again.

“Do you remember when we―” Victoria released a loud burp.

Alex let out a drunken chuckle. “That was good one!”

Victoria started laughing with him as she laid her forehead on his leg. “I forgot what I was saying.”

They laughed for a while, reminiscing on old high school memories. They were surprised they never had the guts to talk like this when they were sober. But they guessed that when they were intoxicated, there were literally no rules. And that was something Victoria appreciated the most.

“I’ve missed this.” He said as he leaned back on the couch with her head on his shoulder.

Her eyes were closed, and she could feel sleep trying to cover her like a blanket. “What?”

“Drinking with you … talking with you …” He scrunched his nose as he thought, and then smiled. “Mostly just you.”

She chuckled, moving closer to rest her head in the small of his neck and feeling the familiar warmth. She breathed in and smelt the same cologne he had years ago. “You’re so fucking cheesy.”

“Are you saying you don’t miss me?” He joked.

“That’s the exact opposite.”

“Then look at me.”

She scoffed. “I’m tired―”

He lifted her face from his shoulder, making her open her eyes and smell the alcohol from his breath. He brought her so close that she could lean her forehead on his. She breathed out, trying to fight the urge to press her lips to his like she wanted to for so long. She couldn’t, and the war inside of her didn’t subside.

“I want to kiss you so bad right now.” She muttered, her intoxicated breath combining with his.

“Why don’t you?”

She could feel his lips just inches away, so the real question was: why didn’t she? Why not go after him right now?

Because she had a conscious.

“You have a girlfriend.”

She could almost feel the smirk tug at his lips as he said, “I don’t see her here.”

She wanted to fight it, but her adrenaline got the best of her. In that second, she connected her lips to his. She hungrily kissed him, to the point they had fallen to the floor in a tangled body mess. His tongue nudged her bottom lip, and she gladly granted him access. Their tongues collided eagerly, the desire from their teenage years replaying.

His lips left her own, leaving her mouth cold and lonely like all these years without his familiar taste. “Tides brought me back to you,” he whispered, giving her goose bumps at the known words. He lingered along her square jawline, working down as he started to place light kisses down her neck. She wanted to enjoy this, but even though her drunken lust, the thought of Lisa kept creeping into her brain.

She felt his teeth drag over her weak spot between her neck and her collarbone. She held in her gasp, knotting her fingers in his brown locks and pulling his head to connect their lips once again. His fingers tapped at the end of her tee, and that was when she knew she was in for a long night.

One that she might or might not regret.
