Bulletproof Love

The Subtle Tattoo

The days had gone by quicker than Victoria imagined. By this time, they already only had two days left. Alex knew how much these days meant to Victoria, so he tried to make the best out of it. That meant finally going to those art museums she always wanted to go to with him, strumming tunes for her and only her, and more long kisses than they’ve shared in the long year they’ve known each other.

Victoria found it surprising that her parents never found out how much Alex went to and from their houses. Every night for those five days, he crept in, taking the same spot besides Victoria’s sleeping form, so in the morning, she’d wake up to something happy. She loved that he did this. But she couldn’t help the fact that this was a way of the world teasing her―allowing her to wake up each morning next to her boyfriend, when in a couple of days, she wouldn’t even see him anywhere near her.

Alex was already up and dressed by ten AM when he shook his sleeping girlfriend’s shoulder. “Wakey wakey, eggs and bakey,” he whispered in her ear, causing her to stir and turn the pillow over her head. “Come on, Hamilton. I have an appointment.”

She lifted the pillow off her head a little. “What appointment?”

“Just be ready in fifteen,” he grinned and hopped off her bed, smacking her butt under the sheets in the process. “Don’t let me down, Hamilton!” He said as he crawled through the window and ran back to his house.

She let out a loud groan and sighed as she got up. She tried her best to get dressed and look presentable, but it was hard when her and Alex had spent the night talking until three AM.

When she was dressed, she walked across the street to Alex’s, seeing him lean against his car and stare at her. “Hey, sexy,” he greeted as he held her hips close to his and pecked her on the lips.

She looked down at her sweatpants she wore and back up at him. “Your opinion, not mine.”

He laughed. “Just get in the car.”

“Mind telling me where we’re going exactly?” She asked as he pulled out of his driveway.

“Don’t you like surprises?”

“I’m not particularly fond of them.” She muttered, looking out her window.

When they arrived at the local tattoo parlor and parked on the sidewalk, Victoria turned to stare at him. “Um …”

“Ready?” He beamed.

“I hope you know that I have a fear of needles.”

“As much as I’d love to see you squirm at the sight of a needle piercing your skin,” he joked, “this is an appointment for me.”

“Excuse me?” She questioned, but he was already out of the car.

She followed him inside the place and looked around at all the muscly guys with sleeves of tattoos. She saw one of the workers in the progress of coloring in a guy’s skull tattoo. She almost cringed at the sight of the needle. She hated this fear, because she actually liked tattoos and wanted some someday. But today was not that day.

An almost lanky guy with a sleeve and small beard approached them, wiping the ink off on his jeans. “Here for a couples tattoo?” He asked.

Victoria quickly shook her head while Alex clarified, “Nah, just for me.”

“Alex: ten thirty appointment?”

Alex nodded as he was whisked away by the man. Victoria almost followed before Alex pointed to her, saying, “No, you stay there and wait.”

“I’m not a dog, Alex!” She huffed and crossed her arms over her chest.

“Whatever you say!” He laughed.

She sat down on a chair in the seating area as she saw an employee staring from her to Alex walking away. “Boy, aren’t you guys a cute couple.”

She chuckled a little and waited there. She estimated that she sat there for a couple of hours, because it got to the point where she decided to scroll through her Instagram feed. She finally heard his familiar voice saying, “Thanks, man!” She looked up, seeing Alex striding towards her.

“Let me see the damage,” she sighed as he approached her.

He grinned down at her as he saw her eyes squint at the new marking of ink on his inner forearm. It took her a minute before she questioned, “April 4th, 2005?” She glanced up at him, confused. “Why did you get a tattoo of the date, April 4th, 2005?”

All he did was laugh and wait for her to catch on. Realization finally dawned on her and she hit his bicep. “Very subtle, Gaskarth,” she shook her head, realizing the familiar date of the day she lost her virginity to him. “You had to get that permanently on your skin?”

“Of course, I did,” he said, kissing her forehead as he wrapped his arms around her.

She appreciated the gesture he did; she loved it actually. But she didn’t think Alex got the point of tattoos. He did know that it would be their forever, right?

And some other things don’t stay forever.
