Closer To Me

Anna Brown

Alex's POV

Anna Brown.

That's her name. With long, wavy, dark hair that never straightens, much to her despair. To most she is a no one- just another misfit; but to me, she's my best friend and has been for over 10 years. She's literally my everything. Every moment of my day is consumed by either being with her or thinking about her. For want of a better word, she's my soul-mate. Not in a lame, touchy-feely way. In a 'best friends that are just meant to be' kind of way.

I met Anna in 1995 when I was six and we moved to her neighbourhood. She was always out playing from dawn until dusk and I guess my Mom pitied her. She would always invite her over for a 'play date' and for sleepovers. Anna was never well-kept, but it got worse when her parents went through a very public break up and she was left with her abusive Mom. She was ten when she started to sleep round mine for five or six nights a week, and she's never looked back, I guess. She still has to visit her Mom once a week, because as Anna always tells me “no one is totally bad”. But having met the woman who calls herself Anna's 'mother', I would disagree.

The only good thing about that house is her ginger cat, Basil- A gift my family bought her for her 8th birthday.

Through the years Anna still hasn't seemed to grow much. She's stayed a petite 5 feet tall, which she constantly moans about, because even though she's average build, her thighs always look like 'big chunks of meat'. That's one thing I'll never understand about her- how someone so beautiful and perfect can hate their body.

Her shortness and her dark hair is nothing when compared to her eyes, though. Her eyes are a piercing light blue and seem to have an amazing ability to light up a room when she enters it.

“Earth to Alex,” Anna laughs, waving her hand in front of my face.

“Huh?” I reply finally, yawning to make it appear my absence is due to tiredness.

“I thought I'd bored you, sorry,” she mumbles, clearly upset.

“No, no. Sorry, I'm just tired,” I assure, lying through my teeth, trying to shun the thoughts of how perfect Anna is from my mind “Are you okay?”

“Mhm,” she sighs, looking around the crowded cafeteria, clearly anxious. “Look, can we just go please?”

“Uh, sure,” I frown, getting up- leaving my half eaten plate of food on the table, too concerned with Anna's unusual lack of speech to feel much like eating.

Anna speeds down the empty halls, her head down and her books clenched tightly to her chest. I run to keep up with her, allowing her to lead me to my own car. She tugs the door to show she wants me to unlock it.

She sits in her usual front passenger seat when I open it and throws her skinny legs onto my dashboard.

“There's something up,” I frown, knowing her too well.

She looks at me, tears forming in her eyes- her throat pulsating slightly as she tries to struggle words out, despite the pain of holding the tears in.

Notes

So I know this is really short, but I haven't written in over a year, so be nice! :)

If I get a couple of comments I'll post the next chapter tonight, and it's a bit more exciting, I promise!

So, yeah, comment and read and subcribe, you know the drill :)

Thank you!
