Life's Greatest Tragedy

The Crowd Is Calling, "Hey, Sing Louder Now!"

"No, no, this isn't good enough. The beat just doesn't sound right. Jack, you've got to keep up with Rian, otherwise this is a waste of time."

"Maybe Rian should slow down some," Jack defended, plucking on a guitar string. "Alex, I can't play it any faster, it'll sound like shit. We can just change the song a little."

Alex groaned, pinching the bridge of his nose in frustration. The boys had a big show coming up, one of the biggest they'd ever played at a local venue, but stress was preventing them from getting a single song right. They were all determined to blow the crowd, and the venue workers, away. The problem was, they felt like their songs were a little too high school, like no one would take them seriously.

That meant they needed new material.

Writing lyrics had always come easy to Alex, but knowing that the entire band was counting on him kind of made him a little sick to his stomach. The current song they were working on wasn't bad, but Rian and Jack couldn't keep a rythem and the lyrics seemed to overflow the beat. Zack was the only member that wasn't having a shit fit, and that was simply because he didn't care that much. He did his part, the rest was on them. Not only that, but he was trying to muster the courage to sing in front of a brand new crowd.

"It's the lyrics," Alex admitted, sliding his own guitar off his body. He propped it against the wall and plopped down on the couch beside the small brunette with a frown on her face. She'd been there for moral support, just as she always had, but what Alex really wanted was a hug, a kiss, and a reminder that everything would be okay. However, they hadn't gone public with their relationship, which meant no kisses for him. "Why don't you guys go get us some food and drinks? I'll work on tweak the lyrics a bit."

Rian shrugged his shoulder and dropped his sticks, waiting by the stairs for Zack and Jack. The boy with the skunk hair lingered by his guitar, which was propped up beside Alex's and gave Jasey a small smile. In his mind, she probably felt uncomfortable being around the band at a time like this. He figured she could use a break.. Plus, spending some time with her would make him happy. They may not have worked out in the past, but his crush on her never totally faded. But how could it? They always spent so much time together. She was the only girl who was really welcomed into the group.

"Hey Jase, do you wanna come with us?"

"Nah, I think I'll stay here," Jasey mumbled, glancing up at him with a soft smile. The stack of CD's beside her had made her fingers sore, but she did have a job to do and it was a perfect excuse to stay with Alex. "If I don't get more labels on these CD's, no one's going to buy them. You guys go on, but bring me back some cheese sticks!"

"Cheese sticks," Jack smiled, heading towards his friends, "got it."

The two waited until the stomping up the stairs had faded away and the door was fully closed to scoot closer to one another. Alex wrapped his arm around her small shoulder and she rested her head on his chest. His heart was thudding quickly, but smoothly, and she couldn't help but smile at his scent.

Moments like this were nice. Sometimes she and Alex got to cuddle up when the group had movie nights at his house. When someone selected a scary movie, they never questioned the closeness. Well, except for maybe Jack. He was used to seeing her curled up with Zack, or perhaps even himself. But they knew the two were best friends, in some way, so it went unnoticed.

Honestly, though, Jase was getting sick of keeping their relationship a secret. It'd been a while since the night she and Alex spent together, not to mention the night they got together, and she was starting to believe Alex was embarrassed to be with her. What other excuse did he have? Sure, he was Alex Gaskarth, boy that couldn't be tamed. But she got him and she wanted the world to know it.

"You're putting too much thought into it," Jasey finally spoke, glancing up at him with her lips gently curved. "The song is great, you're just taking this too seriously."

"Jase, you can't take something like this too seriously. This could be our chance to break out."

"You're not going to break out because you have a new song that you can't get right. You're going to break out because people like the music they already know and they want to hear more of it. Seriously, Alex, you guys are great. Take a second to realize it."

"But what about the crowd? These aren't the kids we put on shows for here at home. This is a whole new world. If they declare that we suck, that's it, we suck."

"Alexander, shut your face."

Alex furrowed his brows and looked down at his cocky girlfriend. The smirk on her lips brought a smile to his own, but he really did need to vent this out if he had any hope of impressing a crowd. He was about to say something else, a comment that would make Jasey feel bad, but the pressure of her hands on his stomach and the brushing of her lips against his own made him lose his train of thought.

"That crowd that you're so afraid," Jasey breathed, her lips still tingling from his touch, "they're not scary mosters. They're coming to see your show. Alex, you've got to show them what it means to be alive."

A flicker in Alex's eyes gave Jasey hope. Her words had made some impact, which was more than she could have hoped for. With a smile on his lips, Alex bent down and planted a heavy kiss on her cheek. She giggled, smacking him away with little to no force.

"Jasey Rae, what would I do without you?"

"Eat too much food and fail your classes?"

"Probably so."

As the laughter fell from her lips, Alex pulled her up off the couch. Something about her words, making the crowd feel alive, it gave him a new found confidence. If there was something he was good at - Aside from swooning girls and making music - It was capturing the attention of the crowd. So long as he went up there like he owned the place, no one could cut him down. Not Jack's playing, no Rian's quick hands, not Zack's shyness. They'd be a hit, he just knew it.

"You know what?" Alex pulled her into his arms, resting his forehead against her own as he began to sway to the beat of no music. "I think I'm ready to tell everyone about us. You're the best thing that ever happened to me, and so what if Jack is upset at first? He'll be happy for us eventually, I mean, how could he not?"

"Do you really want to tell them? I wouldn't want to rush you."

"You're not. I can't think of a more perfect time to tell them. We could do it after the show, ya know, after we sweep those people off their feet."

"You're positive about this? No backing out last minute?"

"No backing out," Alex whispered, giving her a small spin just to see her smile, "it's time to let them know."

Just as he melted her heart, Alex began to hum in her ear as he wrapped his arms tightly around her. Her voice was the perfect tone for their slow dance, their romance.

Jasey Rae had never been happier than she was in that moment with him.
