Life's Greatest Tragedy

Tribute to a Night, I'll Never Forget

"Jasey, you're such a wuss," Jack snickered, tossing a pillow at the brunette cowering in fear. The blanket that was originally meant to keep her warm was now being used as a way to cover her eyes from the television screen, while Zack's arm helped keep her from shivering. "It's just a movie. No one is going to come getcha while you sleep."

"Shut it, Barakat," Jasey spat back, curling further into Zack's chest as she did so. "I wasn't the one who had to be pulled out of the haunted house last year!"

"Well, that's probably because you didn't go in," Alex teased, sending a wink in her direction. He felt bad for Jasey because she always got picked in, but on the other hand, she made it so easy to crack a joke at her expense. "And as much as I'd like to sit here and pick on sweet little Jasey, my 'rents are going to be home soon and my mom will kill me if she sees this mess."

With those few short words, all of the guys stood up and waved Alex off. This was a natural reaction. They didn't mind making a mess of his house, just like they didn't mind rocking out in Rian's basement, but they damn sure weren't going to help pick up when the fun was over. Alex didn't care very much, either. Being a teenager meant he was bound to make a mess and Jasey always hung back to help him clean up. She actually did most of the cleaning, while Alex just carried dishes and empty cans to the kitchen.

Jasey, honestly, didn't mind this either. Being the girl of the group meant most of the guys expected her to do things like this, the same way they came to her when they had a broken heart or an injury. It made her feel special and needed, though that wasn't the only reason she agreed to do the dirty work. Mostly, she stuck around just to be around Alex without someone picking on her every two seconds. He was kind of the highlight of her day, the one person that could put a smile on her lips, even when she wanted to tear her hair out.

It was no secret that Alex and Jasey were attracted to each other. They had been, for a very long time. They just thought it was best to not act on those feelings. The two had been neighbors since Alex moved in. For a while, they were young and awkward, and didn't say a word to each other. Then, High School came. Alex discovered his love for girls and Jasey finally needed a bra. She was still the short, pretty brunette girl he remembered her as, but she wasn't as awkward or shy. They befriended each other half way through their freshman year, when Alex was paired with her for a history assignment. She had the brains, he had the charm. Needless to say, they aced the damn thing.

Now, they were sixteen and Jasey was officially a member of the gang. Everyone loved her, despite how much they picked on her. She kept them in check and reminded them all that girls were more than pretty faces. They'd been through a lot with their friendship. Zack had claimed her as his little sister, willing to protect and defend her against anything. Rian often came to her when he had a problem with his own girlfriend, Kara, simply because she and Kara were somewhat friends. Jack had fallen for her the first week she started hanging out with him. They shared an incredibly awkward kiss and realized there was no way in Hell they could stand to date each other. They acted like the little kids on the playground, but there was no great love story in their future.

No, it was Alex that Jasey felt most connected to. When they were alone, they would often speak of things much deeper than sex or music. Alex would dish out all of his emotional and anxiety issues, while Jasey would go on for hours about how her parents drive her insane. There were even some late nights where they'd hold each other, cuddle, while watching a movie once everyone had left. Or times when they'd be on the porch steps, about to part ways, and they'd inch their heads in ever-so-slightly, but they never touched.

Alex was afraid to make his move with Jase. For one, if something went wrong, he'd have to deal with the guys. For two, she was more than a drunk chick at a party. She was his friend and Alex didn't have feelings for his friends.. Or, he shouldn't. There was too much stake. But, of course, he couldn't deny that her small fingers fit perfectly against his own and when her hair fell in her face, he had to fight the desire to brush it behind her ear. She was an adorable ball of energy and it was killing him to not pin her against a wall and spill his guts.

"So, I guess that's it," Jasey smiled, fluffing the pillows as she placed them back on the couch where they belong. "What time will your parents be home?"

"Not for a while, actually," Alex confessed, a hint of guilt in his voice. "You just seemed like you needed an out earlier."

"So, you lied?"

"A little bit."

Jasey giggled and shook her head. She rolled her eyes at him and made her way to the front door, slowly reaching for her shoes so she could slip them on. Alex watched every move she made, trying to find a way to ask her to stay long enough to at least watch another movie - one that won't give her nightmares - or just to talk.

"Something wrong, Alex?"

"I, uh," Alex pushed some hair away from his face and shook his head. Why did she have to be so cute? Why couldn't she be like other girls, the kind the could swoon without a second thought? "I just thought maybe you'd ask me to walk you home. Since, you know, that movie scared the shit out of you."

"No one's around, do you really have to keep picking on me?"

"I'm not picking on you," he defended, holding his hands up in the air, "I'm serious. I don't want you to get scared walking the ten feet from my place to yours."

"Ha-ha." Jasey frowned, slipping on her shoes rather quickly. "I'll see you tomorrow, Alex."

"Jasey, wait-"
"Sweet dreams."

Just like that, she was out of the door. Honestly, he was trying to make fun of her, it was just an excuse to get her to stay. Then again, he could have used a different approach, like actually telling her that he wanted her to stay. Deciding not to dwell on it, Alex let out a sad sigh and dragged himself up the stairs and to his bedroom. He closed the door behind him and flipped on the light, letting his eyes scan over the posters hanging on his wall. He would normally use his time alone to write, but lately his feelings for Jase had been bugging him. The butterflies he got when he was around her just kept growing and growing, bothering him so much he was determined to find a way to murder the bastards. He would even sit down sometimes and try to figure out things he didn't like about the girl.

But that was the problem. He liked everything about her.

Letting out a grunt, he made his way over to his bed and sat down on the edge. There was no use in trying to sleep, it was too early for that. There was no point in turning on the television, he'd just ignore it anyway. Not even his guitar was calling his name tonight. Thankfully, he was saved from his thoughts when a light tapping came on his bedroom door. Not even caring who it was, he dragged himself off of the bed and wrapped his fingers around the knob.

He didn't expect to find Jasey on the other side.

"You were right," Jasey admitted, looking down at her feet. "I'm too scared to walk home alone."

"I honestly wasn't trying to freak you out, Jase."

"Then what exactly were you trying to do?"

"I was-" Alex cut himself off, running a hand over his face. "I was trying to get you to stay longer."

"You're joking, right?" Jasey huffed, crossing her arms over her small chest. "By scaring me? Dick move, dude. I'm really going home now."

"No, no, you're not," Alex murmured, grabbing her arm to hold her in place. "I'm not trying to be a dick, I'm just trying to spend some time with you. Is that okay?"

Jasey felt her body tense up as his fingers wrap around her flesh. The hair on the back of her neck stood up as his calloused fingers trailed down her arm and to her hand. Alex completely drove her crazy. She knew, that he knew, that she was fond of him. The fact that he hadn't acted on it simply stated that he wasn't attracted her like he was all those other girls. It made her feel like a fool for being so drawn to him. Everyone at school thought Alex was pulling more ass than anyone else, but the reality was, he would only date those girls for a day or two before he got bored of them. He was no more sexually active than she was, and that's saying a lot, since she was still a virgin.

Still, her body trembled at the touch of his warm hand, from nerves and not from fear. Alex sensed this, but instead of letting her go so she could run to the comfort of her bed, he pulled her closer. Their chests were almost touching, and by this point, Alex decided that he could fight it anymore. She was too cute, too innocent, too... Jasey.

His free hand grazed her chin, lifting her head so that she had no choice but to look in his eyes. Her dark orbs were clouded with confusion, but her parted lips and short breaths told him she was just as anxious to try the kiss as he was. Feeling more confident, Alex slowly bent down and brushed his lips against hers. A warmth rushed through his veins and his head started to swim. No other kiss he'd ever had, had felt like this one. There was something different about Jasey and he wanted to find out what it was.

Their lips moved perfectly together until the shortest pulled away to breathe. Her hands were resting on his chest, giving him goosebumps from the very thought. She stayed close, her eyes fluttering to the new sensation. Jasey exhaled a deep breath and wrapped her arms around his neck, the difference in their height forcing him to come down to her level, where she smashed her lips on his again.

Alex pulled her into the room just in time for her feet to catch the door and sling it to a close. With his arm hanging loosely around her lower back, he gently shoved her against the door and let his tongue dance along her lower lip, instantly gaining the access he'd been asking for. His hips grinded against hers and her fingers pulled at his hair. They were a hot mess of hormones, dripping with lust.

Knowing he couldn't take much more, Alex pulled away from her with a deep breath. She looked confused, and sad, but he had no intentions of ending it there. His eyes lingered on hers, silently asking her opinion on the matter at hand. She bit her lip, thinking on it for a moment, before her dark hair fell into her face from the nodding of her head. Alex's smile grew, if only for a moment, while his fingers wrapped around the light switch and killed the glow. His body found Jasey's one more. Together, they stumbled to the bed and made history for themselves.
