I Won't Let You Choke On Your Misery

Chapter 31

We walked to the beach in silence, there was a mutual realisation that nothing could be said to make this any easier. Alice tightly held my hand, our arms swung between us. We walked to the bottom of a steep hill, I heard the sea before we reached the beach. We walked down a short path through some trees and came to the shore. Silver moonlight shone onto the water, highlighting the gentle waves. Waiting for us in the dark was Zack. He gave me a small smile and pecked Alices cheek. "He's waiting for you" He told me. I gently nodded. This was it. Alice dropped my hand. She wrapped her arms around me tightly and whispered only for me, her breath tickled my ear. "Everything will be okay" I wished I could believe her. She pulled away, staring me squarely in the eyes, telling me she meant it. I nodded my head subtly once. I couldn't manage to lift my lips into a smile like I wanted to. She put her hand in Zacks and turned, leaving me alone in the darkness. I stood there for a moment, listening to the waves and the sound of my rapidly increasing heartbeat. I tried to pull my thoughts together. I exhaled deeply, putting my foot forward and began the walk to the conversation I really didn't want to have. I was literally fighting the urge to run in the opposite direction. I saw him before he saw me. He was sat right by the waters edge, throwing stones into the water. Just the sight of him made my throat thick and my hands shake. I stood a few meters away from him, waiting for him to realise I was here. He was obviously so absorbed in his thoughts he hadn't seen me. I cleared my throat. He snapped his head round and immediately stood up, keeping the small distance between us. "Hi" His careful voice cut the silence, an awkward smile on his lips. "Hey" My voice sounded strange. I swallowed, trying to get rid of the weird edge. When I didn't return the smile he dropped his eyes to the floor and pushed his hands in his pockets, kicking the sand around between his feet. We stood there for at least a minute, no words passing between us. "Jack we don't need to have this conversation" That was the honest truth. "I think we do, I owe you that much" his eyes met mine briefly before returning to the sand beneath his feet. "You don't owe me anything, you never have done Jack" I said quietly. He nervously ran his hand through his hair before placing it back in his pocket, his eyes back to the floor. "I don't know where to start" He laughed weakly once without humour. "Then don't. I understand. I was stupid to think this could ever work anyway" He immediately flicked his eyes back to mine. It was dark, but I didn't need much light to see the hurt in his eyes. I carried on talking, keeping my voice low. "My stuffs packed and its round zacks. I've tried to make this as easy as possible, I promise i'll be gone tomorrow morning" My voice was barely louder than a whisper by the end of my sentence. It was a promise I never dreamed I would have to make. "What? Your gunna give up that easy?" Jack said with exasperation, raising his voice. Which I matched. "What the hell do you want me to do?" My outburst caught him by suprise, he stared at me wide eyed. His lips trembled as he tried to find the right words to use. "Look" He exhaled, his expression growing sad. He slowly closed the gap between us. "I'm so sorry for all the shit you've been through because of me, the shit I've put you through. But please...don't leave" His breath brushed my face and I stood there like an idiot. I was completely bewildered. What was he trying to do to me? "I ... I thought..." I struggled to get my words out. "Thought what?" "That its what you wanted, I went behind your back and-" Jack interrupted me, even more surprised than before. "You thought I wanted you to leave, because of that? Are you insane?" "What was I supposed to think? You walked out without saying a word, then tell me to meet you down here in the dark... What are we doing down here?" A small smile crept onto his face. He walked behind me, pressing his body against mine and placing his hands over my eyes. "What are you doing?" I asked cautiously. "Just trust me" he laughed softly. He guided me along the beach and turned me round a corner. My mind was racing. We came to a stop. "Ready?" He asked, the smile in his voice was obvious. I nodded, a smile widening across my face. Slowly he lifted his hands. I gasped. "...wow...."
