Stand By Me
Grace's POV
As soon as I can, I call the police. When they finally show up, they just whisk Zack away on a stretcher. I barely even get to see him, but when I do, he looks awful. Oh my god. He's going to die, and it's all my fault. My best friend is about to die because of me. Because I wasn't good enough.
Soon enough, paramedics are also tending to me. I had almost forgotten how much I was in pain and bleeding.
"Sweetie, how did this happen? Were you involved in the accident?"
"No.....Zack was my friend. We were fighting and......he hit me. Then he left. I followed his car because I knew he was upset, and then I saw the truck hit him."
"Well the other team said that he woke up, and the other driver is not going to press charges."
"Zack's awake? I have to get to the hospital to see him!"
"Calm down, hon. We're taking you there. We're not sure how extensive the damage to your head is. Are you going to want to press charges against Mr.Merrick for assault?"
"What? No, no. He wasn't in his right mind. He didn't mean it. He- He's my best friend."
The paramedic gave a small, sad smile. "He's alright sweetie. Now let's get you to the hospital."
They help me into the ambulance and we set off to the hospital. They talk to me, but I remain quiet the entire trip. I can't think about anything except for Zack.......and Alex.
"Ms.Brown? Is there anyone we should call for you? A parent, perhaps?"
"No, not a parent. My dad left years ago, and since I'm okay, we don't need to call my mom off work. My friend can come get me, I need to talk to him. Alex Gaskarth."
Work. As if I don't know she's out partying and sleeping around and doing drugs. I don't care. She paid off the house and there's usually food around. Alex told me he's here for me, so I figure he won't have a problem with this. From how he talks, his parents aren't around much either.
I hand them my cell phone and the nice lady makes the call. When she hangs up, she gives me my phone and smiles. "You've got a pretty amazing friend there. He'll be here soon."
They finish patching me up and sign my release. I see Alex and he runs to me, giving me a huge hug.
"You worried me so much Gracie."
"I'm sorry Alex."
"Don't be. I'm glad you told them to call me. Oh and by the way, this does NOT count as our first date."
I smiled up at him. "That's fine by me, Gaskarth."
"I am always here for you Gracie."
He pecks my forehead and scoops me up into his arms.
