“Jack! Are you nearly ready honey?” my Mom called.

“Yeah Mom, just a second!” I called back.

I turned back to the mirror, fixing my blue tie slightly before styling my hair into a bit of a spiked do. I was finally finished with high school, moving onto the big wide world. It was prom night and I wasn’t too excited to be honest. I was going to prom with my best friends Rian and Zack, we decided a group arrival would be fun.

“Jack!” Mom yelled excitedly.

I groaned as I looked over myself once more in the mirror. I didn’t go with a suit for my attire, I decided on a white button shirt, blue tie, black waistcoat, black pants and some converse. I liked to take a little risk. I walked out of my room and walked down to the lounge room where my Mom and Dad were.

“Oh honey you look wonderful!” she exclaimed.

“Looking good son” Dad chuckled.

“Thanks” I replied.

As if on cue there was a knock at the door and I opened it to see Zack and Rian dressed up in their clothing, smiles on their faces. We decided to go with matching ties and call ourselves the ‘Blues Brothers’, pretty cheesy I know.

“Jack!” they yelled in unison, embracing me in a tight hug.

“Guys I can’t breathe!” I screamed.

They laughed as they let me go and I straightened myself out and Zack lent forward, putting a rose into the button of my waistcoat collar.

“Pretty!” he squealed in a girlish voice.

Rian and I looked at each other before going into fits of laughter. Zack was always full of humour and character, always making us laugh. But sometimes my laughs were fake. Why? Well, for the past four months I’ve been crushing on the most popular guy in school. He’s an exchange student from Essex, his name is Alex Gaskarth. He’s absolutely beautiful to look at, sometimes we would pass in the hall and he would give me a small wave, but that was it.

“Jack?” Rian asked, snapping me out of my trance.

“Sorry” I mumbled.

“Quick boys, let’s get a photo and get you sent off” Dad issued.

I nodded as Rian, Zack and I stood together and got photos taken, making silly faces and standing in different poses. Mom walked up to me with tears in her eyes as she kissed my forehead and hugged me tight.

“Have a good night” she whispered.

I nodded as Rian, Zack and I linked arms and walked outside. I gasped when we saw our ride. It was a huge monster truck with cushioned seats in the trunk for us to sit in.

“No fucking way!” I exclaimed.

“Yes fucking way” Zack replied.

I chuckled as we helped each other up into the back and sat down. This was amazing! I gazed out at the streets as we drove past in the monster truck, people waving at us as we went by. I had the biggest smile on my face, but it couldn’t heal the pain of how much I was falling for Alex. Dammit I wish he knew.

*Time lapse an hour*

We arrived at the venue for our prom and people gasped when they saw what we arrived in. I smiled as we got out of the monster truck and people were chanting our names, even mine. We walked down the red carpet, striking a pose at the end as our photo was taken. All the girls looked really beautiful in their dresses, and the guys looked great also. God Jack you’re such a perv I cursed to myself.

“Come on Jacky boy!” Zack called, grabbing my hand.

We walked into the dance hall and I saw students dancing to the music from the DJ that the school had hired. Zack and Rian wandered off to talk to people so I decided to sit myself in a corner and just watch people dance.

“Jack!” someone called.

I turned my head as I saw my friend Ashley Costello walk towards me.

“Ash!” I exclaimed.

She wrapped me up in her arms giving me a big bear hug before pulling away and resting her hands on my shoulders.

“Why are you sitting all the way over here, come and sit with me” she soothed.

Ashley’s always been rather popular in school too, I don’t think I’d fit in with her group.

“No it’s ok” I replied, taking her hands off my shoulders.

“No really, I insist Jack” she chuckled, taking my hand in hers.

Before I could decline again she had me weaving through crowds of people until we came to a table where there was about five other people there, all being guys.

“Jack, this is Vic Fuentes, Austin Carlile, Chris Motionless, Ben Bruce and Alex Gaskarth” Ashley spoke. “Guys, this is Jack” she added, letting go of my hand.

My eyes instantly met with Alex’s as he gave me a timid smile and I swear my heart was going to burst out of my chest.

“Hey Jack” the tall guy with piercings said, shaking my hand. “I’m Chris” he chuckled.

I nodded my head as I shook hands with everyone else, even Alex, making my nerves hit the roof.

“Come sit beside me” he said, patting the seat beside him.

I smiled sheepishly as I sat down beside him, cringing at my stupid awkwardness.

“So Jack, what do you want to do when you leave school?” Alex questioned.

“Um...play in a band” I whispered.

“No way, me too!” he exclaimed.

I blushed at his accent, looking down for a second as I twiddled my thumbs.

“Really?” I questioned.

“Yeah, the only thing is finding a band” he chuckled.

“What do you play?” I asked.

“Well, I play guitar but I sing too” he sighed, a little disappointment in his face.

“My friends Zack, Rian and I are looking for a vocalist for our band” I soothed.

Alex looked directly at me, his lips parted slightly as I fought the urge to kiss him right there and then.

“Would it be ok if I joined?” he questioned hopefully.

I shrugged slightly as a hurt look showed on his face.

“I-I didn’t mean it like that, I just don’t know” I stammered.

“Yeah...sure” he whispered.

Alex stood up as he slipped past me and I looked at Ashley and she titled her head and frowned.

“Go after him Jack” she ordered.

I nodded as I quickly got out of my seat and followed behind Alex. I saw him leave out onto the balcony and I walked out after him, closing the door.

“Alex” I soothed.

“What?” he asked, his body shuddering slightly.

I noticed the choked tone in his voice and I walked up to him, turning him around to see tears in his eyes.

“Don’t cry” I whispered.

“I’m sorry, I just...I really want to be in a band” he sobbed.

I couldn’t handle this anymore, I had to do something. I rested my hands on Alex’s cheek and he gasped, looking directly into my eyes.

“Alex I need to tell you something” I spoke.

Alex nodded slightly as I wiped some tears away from his eyes.

“I’m in love with you” I purred.

Alex looked at me, more tears starting to form.

“Jack I...I can’t” he whispered, pulling away.

I swear I felt my heart break because everything after those words just seemed like a dream. Alex bit his lip and shook his head as he sobbed and ran away from me. I watched him leave as tears fell from my eyes and I turned around, facing out to the city, my body quivering slightly. Jack you’re such an idiot, why the hell would someone as amazing as Alex every want to be with a nobody like you?

“Jack” a voice whispered.

I turned around quickly as I saw Alex standing across from me.

“Alex I’m really so-” I was cut off quickly.

Alex’s lips locked with mine as he cupped my face his hands, pinning me against the balcony railing, one of his legs between mine. I was tense at first before I slipped my arms around his waist, kissing back intently. We pulled away for air and Alex smiled slightly with a blush, wiping tears from my eyes.

“Jack, I’m in love with you too” he soothed.

“For how long?” I asked.

“For too damn long” he purred.

I grinned as I pulled him closer and kissed him again, this time with meaning and passion to the kiss.

“Alex, will you go out with me?” I questioned, looking into his eyes.

“Of course I will” he replied, nudging my nose playfully.

“Fina-fucking-lly!” someone yelled.

Alex and I turned around as we saw Rian, Zack, Ash, Vic, Ben, Austin and Chris standing at the door with smirks on their faces. I looked at Alex and we both blushed as I gripped his hand in mine.

“So is it happening?” Austin teased.

“Well...yeah” Alex chuckled.

They started cheering again as Alex squeezed my hand and I smiled, not faking it this time, this was a real smile. I was so damn happy.

“Let’s blow this joint, it’s lame” Chris groaned.

“Movies at my place!” Ashley screamed.

I laughed as Alex and I linked arms, walking behind Ash and the guys as we made our way away from prom.

“'Cause right now could last forever. Just as long as I'm with you” Alex whispered, smoothing his thumb over my fingers.

“What?” I asked.

“It’s a song I’ve been working on, just for you” he replied.

I stopped in my tracks as I picked him up and spun him around, his screams filling the atmosphere as I put him down, kissing him lovingly. I could never have asked for a better night, it turned from bad to good, and it was all because of Alex, the exhange student I never thought would love a loser like me. I guess I was wrong, but I’m happy...
