Dreaming With A Broken Heart

jersey

“Dash. Jesus Christ, wake up the fuck up.”

Dash groaned at the sudden movement of the blankets being ripped off her previously sleeping body and mentally cursed the owner of the deep voice that accompanied the action. “Gaskarth, you better have a damn good reason for waking me up this early in the day.”

She heard Alex chuckle before the mattress sank down next to her. She opened her eyes slightly to see the messy haired man sitting next to her, looking down. “It's almost one in the afternoon, so your anger is irrelevant right now. But I was actually sent up here by Sébastien to get you out of bed. Tash cancelled – some sort of meeting came up – and so I am on the triple D: 'Distract Dash Duty'. So get up. Get dressed. We're going out.”

Rolling her eyes, Dash pushed herself up in the bed. “Where are we going?”

“Now that, my darling Miss McCafferty, is for me to know and for you to find out.” Alex winked at her and slapped her exposed thigh before hopping up from the bed. “Get dressed. It's beautiful outside, a little chilly though so wear a sweater. I'll meet you downstairs.” He paused at the door, adding, “bring your guitar too.”

He slipped out the door as Dash furrowed her brow. “My guitar? Alex, what the hell do I need a guitar for? Alex!”

She let out a frustrated sigh and threw her legs over the side of the bed. Almost immediately, a smile formed on her face as she remembered last night and writing a song with Alex. Dash hopped out of the bed, picking up her phone from the bedside table and sending a quick text to Kane. They had to video chat as soon as possible and she couldn't wait for him to hear the new song.

“What the hell does Alex plan to do with a guitar?” Dash murmured to herself as she searched through the closet for something to wear. She had been looking forward to spending the day with her cousin's girlfriend, though Dash supposed that spending the day with Alex wouldn't be so bad either.

Dash pulled on a pair of dark skinny jeans and a cowl neck sweater, before pulling a brush haphazardly through her long dark hair. She was securing a belt around her waist when her phone beeped on the bed.

From: Kane Ramsey
I can't wait to hear it! Seb tells me ur partying tonight so text me a time to talk tomorrow. Love u.

She smiled, sticking her phone in pocket and picking up her guitar case, heading downstairs to find Alex.

All the boys were gathered around the kitchen table, talking quietly and hurriedly. Chuck looked up to see Dash standing in the doorway of the kitchen – guitar case in hand – staring at the boys. “Oh hey Dash. How'd you sleep?”

Dash raised an eyebrow, walking towards the group. “Fine,” she said skeptically. “You ready to go Alex?”

“Yeah!” he replied, walking over to Dash and placing a hand at the small of her back. “Let's go, I've got a great idea. We'll see you guys later.”

“So is this their way of getting me out of the house while they get ready for this party tonight?” Dash asked once the two of them had left the house.

Alex chuckled and shook his head. “Yes, but you didn't hear it from me.” He stopped in front of a silver car, opening the passenger side door. “After you, my lady,” he said.

Dash smiled and rolled her eyes. “Can you please tell me where we're going?” she asked as she got into the vehicle. Alex closed the door and quickly walked over to the other side, getting in. “It's a surprise,” he said, picking up his phone and typing something quickly before looking over at the girl sitting in his passenger seat. “But I think you'll like it.”

“I better,” she said, a teasing tone to her voice. “I'm very hard to please, Mr. Gaskarth.”

Alex laughed, glancing over at the girl. “I'll try to remember that, McCafferty.”

“Stanley Park?” Dash asked as she followed Alex from the parking lot. “What are we doing in Stanley Park?”

“Can you just stop asking questions for one damn minute,” he said over his shoulder. “Jesus Dash, you're a nuisance.”

“Fuck you, Gaskarth.”

He glanced back her, a huge grin on his face. “We're here.”

Dash looked up to see a group of about thirty teens standing near a group of benches, looking as if they were waiting for something. “What is going on here?” she asked, pulling her eyebrows together.

As the couple approached the group, the teens noticed the two singers walking towards them. “Oh my god,” a red head gasped. “It's them! It's actually Alex and Dash!”

“What's up guys?” Alex asked, smiling at the group. “I'm so happy people actually showed up. I was a little nervous I didn't give enough time for people to get here!”

“We wouldn't miss it!” squeaked a brunette with large glasses perched on her face. “We're really excited.”

Dash pulled a smile on her face and tapped Alex on the arm. “What's going on, Alex? What are all these kids doing here?”

Alex turned and looked down at the barely five foot tall brunette. “I thought it would be fun if we did a little spontaneous acoustic show for our fans. I sent out a tweet before we left the house that you and I were going to be here at two to play some of our songs for whoever wanted to show up. Honestly,” he said, lowering his voice, “I'm a little surprised that this many people showed up.”

“Kane and I used to do this all the time,” Dash said, her voice low, a small smile on her face. “Usually before shows. We'd tweet a random location and time and just hope that someone showed up. But they always did. It was always so much fun: just being able to interact with these kids at a more intimate level.” The smile left her face and was replaced by a frown. “But Alex, we've never even played together before. I mean, yeah, we worked through that song last night but I don't know the chords to any of your songs. I barely know the words.”

“Ouch,” he said, placing his hand on his heart. “That stings, Dash. I even put in the effort to learn a few of your more popular songs.”

Dash rolled her eyes. “Maybe if you had warned me, I could have went over some of yours.”

“Don't worry about it,” he said. Alex sat down on one of the benches and the kids followed his suit, sitting on the other benches and on the grass. “Alright, so I feel like I should warn you guys that this was completely sporadic for Dash and I. We haven't exactly played together, well, ever, so this really just has the potential to be both disastrous and hilarious in every way.” He looked over at Dash who was still standing awkwardly at the edge of the group. “Are you going to come and join us, Dash?”

Realizing that the kids were watching her, Dash pulled a smile on her face and quickly walked over to sit next to Alex. “Sorry guys,” she said, addressing the group. “I had no idea that we were going to be doing this until I got here. So, I'm sorry if I see a bit... out of it.”

She pulled out her guitar and looked at Alex. “So, what's the plan, Gaskarth?”

He shrugged, plucking a few strings. “I figured you guys could just request some stuff? And we'd try our best to do what we can. And I guess if you guys have any questions or anything, this would be prime time to ask us.”

“What are you guys even doing in Vancouver?” asked a boy in the back of the group.

“The guys from Simple Plan have a house here,” Alex answered. “And I've been hanging out there, taking a break from touring, doing a little writing. It's been fun.”

“What about you, Dash?” asked a small girl in the front of the circle. “Are you writing too?”

“Um, kind of. I mean, I came out to see Baz – or, sorry – Sébastien, and yeah, to do a little writing with Pierre.”

“Do you have anything new written yet?” asked an excited voice.

“Well...”

“Actually, I've kind of been hogging Pierre all to myself,” Alex said, grinning. “Everyone loves a Frenchman.”

The group laughed, causing Dash to smile. “That's very true,” she added. “But Alex and I actually wrote a song last night. It's the first thing I've written since... In a while.”

“Since your break up?”

Dash looked at the girl in the front who had spoken. She immediately blushed as she and Dash made eye contact and dipped her head, light brown hair spilling into her face. “I'm so sorry,” she whispered. “I shouldn't have asked that. That was so rude of me.”

“It's fine,” Dash said, clearly her throat, earning a quick glance from Alex. “But yes, it's been the first thing I've written since Sam and I... ended things.”

“We're all really sorry about that, Dash,” said a boy near the middle. “I know for some of us fans, it was almost as if Sam was an honorary member of the band. He'd been around since the beginning.”

Dash smiled softly at the boy. She hadn't realized that her fans had been so invested in her relationship with Sam themselves. They probably felt the break up in a similar way that she did. “Thank you. All of you. That actually means a lot to me.”

She turned to Alex, who was looking at her intently. “Alex, why don't we play them the song that we wrote together? See what they all they think about it?”

Immediately, the group was pleading with the two, begging to hear the new song. Alex laughed and shrugged. “Sure, why not? How can I say no after all that begging?”

“The actual title is a work in progress,” Dash told them. “So when you guys upload this to Youtube or Tumblr or Twitter or whatever social networking site you plan to upload it to, I give you permission to call it whatever you want. But make it catchy.” She glanced down at one girl, whose phone was held up in front of her face, and winked at the camera.

“You ready?” Alex asked her, his hand hovering over his guitar.

“Ready as I'll ever be.”

“Kane? Do you hear me? Can you see me?”

A huge grin spread across Dash's face as her best friend's face appeared on her computer screen. “Yeah, I can see and hear you. You're looking awful nice,” he said, referring to Dash's curled hair and dark eyes. “How's everything going?”

“Great. Everything's great. I'm supposed to be getting ready for this surprise party that Chuck is orchestrating, but I had to talk to you and I couldn't wait until tomorrow.”

Kane could tell from the tone of his band-mate's voice that Dash was clearly excited about something. He was glad to see that the trip out to the west coast of the country had done her some good. “Well, come on,” he said. “Don't keep me in suspense.”

“Okay,” she said, smiling and taking a deep breath, preparing herself mentally. “I want to do an acoustic album.”

Kane's smile faltered for a moment and he stared at the screen blankly. “Wait, what? An acoustic album? Why?”

“Okay, stay with me. Alex and I went to Stanley Park today and did an acoustic thing for our fans in the area. And I got to thinking: do you remember when we used to do stuff like that before and after shows on our first tour? I always had so much fun with just you, me and a guitar. But we stopped. Why? Why did we stop that?” She paused to take a breath before continuing, “I don't know why, but it doesn't really matter. It just got me thinking that it would be fun to rework some of the songs from our first album and maybe even come up with a few new ones that we could put together for an acoustic EP.”

“Dash,” Kane said slowly, weighing his words in his mind, hoping that he wouldn't bring down Dash's good mood with what he was about to say. “I'm really glad that you're so excited about this idea, but we are supposed to be working on a second full length album, not another EP. What happened to the song that you wrote with Alex?”

“Honestly, it was great. It's a great song and I know that I've got another few like it still in me, but it's not the Hanging on for Hope that our fans are used to. It was me sort of experimenting with a different sound and I like it. And I think that you'll like it.”

Kane sighed. He always found it so damn difficult to say no to that girl. “Okay Dash, let's say – hypothetically – that I thought this acoustic album was a good idea. We can't waste studio time on this EP.”

“I've got it figured out, Kane. You and Ezra come out here with me and we record a handful of songs in the studio that the guys have here. It'll be quick and raw and perfect. And then we give what we've come up with to Dan and the guys at Atlantic to see what they think. I already have an idea of what to do with it, but I need you guys out here. I can't do this alone.”

Kane was quiet for a few moments as he mulled over Dash's proposition. She bit her lip as she waited. She had been struck with the idea of an acoustic album the moment that she and Alex had left the park that afternoon. The kids had loved spending time with the two singers, just them and their guitars and their voices. It reminded her so much of why she had started making music with her friends in the first place. She had hoped that Kane would have been as excited as she was about this EP album idea.

“I will talk to everyone,” Kane finally said. “I'm supposed to be going to dinner with my sister and Hunter tomorrow, so I will bring it up then. I'll tell them everything you told me and we will discuss it. But Dash, if they're not on board with this, you really need to start focusing on the actual album. No more side projects. Deal?”

Dash pushed her black hair out of her face and nodded. “Deal.”

let's write a song that we can sing to

While technically, this is a story of Dash and Alex, right now, I plan to focus on Dash's character development more so than the actual relationship. But know that things are going to heat up between two characters in the next chapter!
