Memories That Fade Like Photographs.
Witness My First Breakdown
I watched, frozen in horror, as Alex plucked out my positive pregnancy test.
“August?” he asked through his teeth.
“Y-Yes?” I replied.
"What's this?" he asked, holding my pregnancy test with two fingers.
"Um." I hesitated.
"When were you planning on telling me?!" he yelled.
"I don't know!" I yelled back.
"So what were you planning on doing?! Getting huge and passing it off as a fucking virus?!" he yelled.
“I-I...You were being so nice to me, I-I didn’t want you to be mad.” I stammered.
“Well, look how well that plan turned out!” he threw up his hands. “So, since you seem to have a plan that doesn’t include me, what do you propose we do about this? We’re both broke, I sure as hell am not ready to raise a fucking child...” I cut him off.
“Neither am I! Did you think of that?” I asked.
“Then get a fucking abortion!” he snapped.
“I can’t...afford an abortion!” I sobbed.
“Well then maybe you’ll think about that next time you want to put out.” he seethed.
He got up and went to his room.
"Just go. Get the fuck out of here." he choked and I did just that. I ran to Jack's and banged on the door. He answered.
"Oh my God, August. What's wrong?" he asked. He took me in his arms and we went to his room and sat on his bed. "What happened?" he asked.
"Alex and I had sex and I'm pregnant and he's really mad." I sobbed.
"Okay come on, you're coming with me." he told me, gently tugging me out the door. We got to Alex's and we walked in the basement, where Alex was playing his guitar.
"You have some real fucking nerve, dickhead." Jack snapped.
"May I help you?" Alex asked curtly.
"Why is August crying?" Jack asked.
"I...I don’t know.” Alex faltered.
“Bullshit you don’t. Yknow, you’ve done some pretty fucking low-down things since we’ve been friends, but this is probably the worst.” Jack said.
“Look, I never asked for this, okay? I’m not ready to be a dad.” Alex choked.
“Well, I’m not ready to be a mom either.” I replied.
“And Alex, that’s no excuse to treat her like this.” Jack added.
“I-I know. God, I’m so sorry, August.” Alex said, a tear running down his cheek.
“I forgive you.” I nodded.
“Now hug!” Jack commanded.
Alex looked up sadly at me and I nodded. He hugged me, muffling a few choked sobs into my neck.
“Good. Now is everyone okay? I’d like to go take a nap now.” Jack said.
“Yes, we’re fine. Thanks, Jacky.” I laughed and waved as he walked out.
