Remembering Sunday

One

Dear Alex, if you’re reading this it means I passed away. I don’t know how it happened all I know is it has. I am writing this to you now while I am in our room, you are mucking around with the boys out the back. You will remember this day…trust me. Today I am leaving you, there is a reason however, when I leave I would have told you I was offered a job overseas and we wouldn’t ever see each other, but the truth is, I am, well was, pregnant. I would stay with you but I feel you are not yet ready to have a child; also I don’t want the world to know about him or her yet. I have decided to call him Drew, if he is a boy or Jasey Rae, I love that song and I think it will suit her very much. I would love to have a girl though. Five years after her or his birth, if I feel you have changed, I will bring him or her to meet you. Anyway, if you are reading this I have passed away. In my Will I am leaving the baby to you. I believe in you and trust that you will raise our angel well. I love you Alex, so much it hurts. Please look after our creation and remember I will always be with you and the baby forever. Goodbye my love. Sunday xo.
Alex looked up to his best friend. “Sunday’s gone, Jack. For real this time.” Tears were streaming down Alex’s face. In one simple motion he crumpled the letter in his hand as he fell to his knees. He dug his hands into the carpeted floor as he screamed in frustration.
Jack spoke up now. “Alex, c-can I read the letter?” Jack reached towards Alex, carefully placing his hand on Alex’s shoulder. Alex hesitated at Jack’s touch but after a moment he raised the hand carrying the letter and gave it to his best friend. Alex watched Jack read the note, he was expecting Jack to stare at Alex as if he were a mad man but instead Jack looked at Alex, he too had tears in his eyes. “Alex, you’re a father, there is a child out there somewhere. He or she is waiting for you to find it. Call child services, maybe they have her in custody now.”
Alex reached to his phone when it started to ring. Alex stared at Jack as he raised the phone to his ear “H-hello.”
“Hello” A little girl spoke through the phone, “are you my da-I mean Alex Gaskarth from All Time Low?” The little girl asked Alex shyly.
“Yes it is. May I ask who this is?” Alex scratched his head and got up off the floor. He looked at Jack and shrugged.
“Err, I am your daughter. My name is Jasey-Rae Gaskarth. My mummy went to this place called heaven and told me that I will be living with you until she came to get me. Is it ok if I stay with you?” Jasey-Rae sounded confused.
Alex looked at Jack, he couldn’t believe that he was speaking to his little girl. “Yes. Where are you Jasey, I will come and get you now.” Alex searched his living room for his car keys as he spoke. He looked at Jack and smiled, mouthing the words I found her.
When he found his keys he ran out the front door and straight into a little girl. “Ow” Alex heard Jasey’s voice through the phone.
“Jasey are you ok, what happened?” Alex asked quickly.
“You just ran into me, daddy.” Jasey hung up just as Alex turned around to look at her. The first thing he noticed was a big blue and black cast covering her left arm. She was wearing a bright blue sundress to match it. She wore white sandals and had blue nail polish on. Next he looked at her face. Her head was a rounded shape and was covered in chocolate brown hair that was dead straight and fell to her waist. Her eyes were a grass green colour. Just like her mothers. As Alex looked at her eyes he noticed bits of brown mixed into the green. She looked oddly familiar to him. “Hey daddy.” As she spoke Alex noticed she had no front teeth. Jasey gave Alex a toothless smile.
Alex stepped towards her, the entire time he felt recognition. He picked her up and hugged her tightly. “Hello my baby.” Alex dug his head into her shoulder and smelt her, she smelt like cinnamon and vanilla.
Jasey spoke up and brought Alex out of his thoughts with two words. “Can’t breathe.” Alex realised how tightly he was hugging her then and released his grip a little bit, chuckling the entire time.
Just then Rian, Jack and Zack ran out the front door to see where Alex had run off to. Jack cleared his throat and got Alex and Jasey’s attention. “Introductions would be lovely Alex.” Jack smirked as he eyed the little girl Alex held so protectively, “Am I right to assume this is Jasey-Rae?”
Alex looked at the boys and put Jasey down, he knelt so he was the same level as Jasey and spoke, “Yes, you would be Jack. This is my daughter, Jasey-Rae Gaskarth. Jasey, this is Jack.” Jack bowed getting a laugh from the 5-year old. “Rian.” Rian pretended to play the drums earning a smile from her. “And this is Zack.” Zack ran his hand through his hair and waved shyly to her, being rewarded with a wave back.
“Daddy, are these the boys in your band?” The guys smiled and laughed at her cluelessness. Alex nodded and nudged Jasey a little, just enough to make her take a few steps backwards as she giggled.
Jack walked up to Jasey, “Yes Jasey, we are famous. Did you know that?” Jack put his hands on his hips as he spoke sticking his tongue out after he finished.
Jasey giggled at Jack’s silliness and responded innocently. “Yes. I went to your concert with mummy silly.” Like Jack she spoke with her hands on her hips and stuck out her tongue, getting a laugh from the rest of the band.
At the mention of Jasey seeing them in concert Alex thought back to that night a few weeks back.
-Flashback-
“Thank you all I love you!” Alex called out to the screaming fans below him. “Now we’re just gonna keep this mellow for one more song. This is one of my favourite songs.” The crowd screamed and Alex chuckled. “It’s called Remembering Sunday and goes like this.” Alex started to strum the first cords as he looked at the crowd and then back to his guitar. “He woke up from dreaming and put on his shoes, started making his way past two in the morning he hasn’t been sober for days.” He looked at the crowd and caught a pair of green eyes. “Leaning now into the breeze, remembering Sunday he falls to his knees.” He examined the face of the person who had those eyes. “They had breakfast together but two eggs don’t last like the feeling of what he needs.” It was a girl, she stared at Alex as he sung to her. “Now this place seemed familiar to him, she pulled on his hand with a devilish grin, she led him upstairs, she led him upstairs, left him dying to get in.” The fan looked familiar, her lips were full and kissable, her eyes showed love as she watched Alex. “Forgive me I’m trying to find, my calling, I’m calling at night, I don’t mean to be a bother but have you seen this, girl? She’s been running through my dreams, and its driving me crazy it seems, I’m gonna ask her to marry me.” Suddenly it hit him. She is Sunday. His one true love. “Even though she doesn’t believe in love, he’s determined to call her bluff, who could deny this butterflies, they’re filing his filling his.” He smiled and winked at her in the crowd, earning a huge squeal from the fans around her. “Waking the neighbours unfamiliar faces, he pleads though he tries, he’s only denied now he’s dying to get inside.” He smiled wider as he noticed Sunday blush and wave shyly to him. “Forgive me I’m trying to find, my calling, I’m calling at night, I don’t mean to be a bother but have you seen this, girl? She’s been running through my dreams, and its driving me crazy it seems, I’m gonna ask her to marry me.” Alex strummed and closed his eyes as he sung the next verse. “The neighbours said she moved away, funny how it rained, all day, I didn’t think much of it then but its starting to all make sense. Oh, I can see now, that all of these clouds are following me in my desperate endeavour to find my whoever, wherever she may be.” Juliet Simms walked on stage and sat next to Alex, she held his arm as support as she lowered herself onto the seat. “I’m not coming back, I’ve done something so terrible, I’m terrified to speak but you’d expect that from me, I’m mixed up I’ll be blunt now the rain is just, washing you out of my hair and out of my mind keeping an eye on the world, from so many thousands of feet off the ground, I’m over you now I’m at home in the clouds, towering over your head.” Alex examined Sunday as Juliet sang, she was holding someone on her shoulder, Alex looked up to see a young girl, about 4 years old. A wave of recognition came over Alex. She had green eyes like Sunday, in fact she looked so much like her he realised Sunday had a child. Had she moved on that fast? Alex was saddened by this thought “I guess I’ll go home now. I guess I’ll go home now, I guess I’ll go home now, I guess I’ll go home.”
-End flashback-
“Oh my god!” Alex stared at his daughter. He had only realised now why she looked familiar to him. She is the girl he saw Sunday with. “I have seen you before, a couple weeks ago actually.” He smiled at Jasey.
Jasey gave her father a smile. “I knew you would remember that night. Daddy, you are famous!” The girl laughed as she said the last word. Alex smiled down at her and turned his attention back to his friends. He stood there; he and Jack were having a conversation just by looking at each other. Jasey spoke up snapping Alex and Jack put of their olive garden moment. “Um Daddy, can you please tell me how you and mummy met?”
Jasey held Alex’s hand now. “Sure Jay. Just do me a favour first.” Alex’s voice went from sweet and loving to serious. “How did mummy go to heaven?” Alex stared at his beautiful angel as he asked her, hoping she wouldn’t cry as she told him.
Alex was shocked by her expression, her face lit up at the mention of her mother. “Yes daddy.”
Alex led Jasey-Rae inside and into the lounge room. There they were greeted by a large white leather sofa situated by the farthest wall it was facing a 55 inch 3D smart TV that had been hung up on the beige wall. The white tiles were covered in a black and red rug that was dead centre, on the rug sat a coffee table made of blue and red glass. There were several magazines, each with Alex, Jack, Zack and Rian on the covers. Alex turned to Jasey. “Ok, let’s take a seat then you can tell me what happened.” Alex gestured to the sofa. Jasey took two steps towards the seat then ran and dived onto it. Jasey turned around to see Alex chuckling at Jack as he ran into the room, mimicking exactly what he saw the five year old do. “Jack, you know not to do that.”
Jack looked at Alex while he pulled Jasey into his lap and pouted. “But Jasey did it.” Jack buried is hair into Jasey’s hair.
“Jack, don’t make me be responsible, only Jasey can do that.” Alex spoke as he sat next to his friend and daughter, all the while chuckling.
“Ok, daddy, do you want Rian and Zack here too? I want them to hear this. I love talking about mummy.” As Jasey spoke Zack and Rian entered the room and sat on the rug facing the three on the couch.
They brought a short brunette woman with them, she wore a black Glamour Kill’s shirt and three quarter length shorts. She wore black converse and as she entered the room she sat next to Jack and Jasey. She waved at Jasey and kissed Jack’s cheek. “Hey Jasey, I see you ran off after you saw the house. Haha.” Danielle, the mystery woman, spoke hugging the small child.
“Yup! Time to tell everyone the story!” Jasey squealed and jumped off of Jack and ran to her father. “Ok. Well a little bit before I got here, mummy was driving me here for my birthday today! But on our way mummy said she started to feel sick so she took us to the hospital. They told mummy she was going to heaven today and she cried a lot. I cried too. When mummy calmed down she told me to tell her friend Danielle to bring me here. Mummy told me she was very sick and soon she is going somewhere special, she said she wished she could take me with her but she couldn’t. For a while she hugged me and told me she loved me so much. She kept telling me she will come back to get me as soon as she could. Then the thing that made a beeping noise stopped when Mummy fell asleep, the doctor came in then and told me it was time to see Danielle. Then after that happened I got her and called Daddy.” Everyone in the room had tears in their eyes. Alex tightened his grip around Jasey. “Why is everyone crying?” Jasey wondered aloud confused as hell.
Alex frowned at his little girl, he realised now she had never been told what heaven was, he decided now would be a good time to tell her. Alex cleared his throat and looked at Jack, Danielle, Rian and Zack. “Would you guys mind leaving the room while I tell Jasey something?” He questioned them. In a single moment all four had gotten up and left the father and daughter alone. “Jasey,” Alex spoke softly getting the little girl to look at him. “Do you know what heaven is?”
Jasey looked at Alex in the eyes and simply said “Of course, it is the place mummy went to get better. When she is better she will come and get me.” The little girl looked at Alex as she spoke, simply smiling at the thought that Sunday would come back to get her.
“Baby girl, that’s not what heaven is.” Alex frowned more at his confused little girl. “Heaven is the place where people go when they die.” Alex breathed in a shaky breath and watched as Jasey caught on. Tears fell from the youngsters eyes as she realised she will never see her mother again. “Jasey, Sunday loves you very much and she didn’t want to go there but always remember that she is always here.” Alex pointed at Jasey’s heart. “Your mummy loves you very much so you will stay here forever and always. With me, your daddy.” Alex hugged Jasey as she cried on his shirt, soaking through the fine material. Alex’s heart broke as he watched the little girl break down.
“Daddy?” Jasey’s voice broke as she spoke to Alex. “Can we get a cake for my birthday? I want the same kind mummy used to make me.” Jasey hugged her father tighter as she cuddled into him, looking up at him through puppy dog eyes.
“Of course baby. When did you say your birthday was?” Alex questioned the little girl on his lap.
Jasey smiled up at her father as she spoke calmly. “Today. I am 5 now.” Jasey got up of Alex’s la and ran down the hall to Jack, as soon as she saw him she jumped on his back yelling in his ear. “Jaaaaaaaaaack, it’s my birthday today!”
Jack lowered the 5 year old onto the ground as he turned around. He grabbed her up in a giant bear hug and screamed out to her. “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!”
Alex ran into the kitchen where he heard the two laughing together. Rian, Zack and Danielle followed behind him. “Happy Birthday baby girl.” Alex spoke as his phone rung. Alex looked at the caller ID. It read Mickey Mouse. Alex smiled at his friends and daughter and exited the kitchen. He picked up the phone and raised it to his ear. “Hello Flyzik, what’s up?”
“Hey Alex, you have a show tonight remember?” Matt sounded pissed off as he spoke to Alex, probably wondering why the band haven’t showed up yet.
“Shit!” Alex ran his hand through his ear, just as Jasey ran into the room to see what Alex was doing. “Flyzik, can I bring someone with me? She is five and is staying with me tonight.” Alex spoke as he ran back into the kitchen, signalling for the guys to get ready to leave.
Ale her Flyzik open a door on the other end of the line. “Whatever just please get here soon. Alright bye.”
Alex looked at Jasey and smiled warmly. “Guess who gets to see her daddy perform from side stage tonight.” Alex picked up his daughter and looked through the bag she held when she got here. He picked out a nice blue top and some jeans for the five year old to wear.
“Oh my god!” Jasey squealed as she watched her father get things for Jasey to use for the night. Alex finally picked up an All Time Low shirt. The very one he gave to Sunday the night before she left. Sighing, he picked it up and put it on his daughter. Completing her outfit for the night.
