My Name, Is X

March 15, 2014

Nothing can be heard but the sound of my footsteps on the pavement. I stay quiet, listening for the moans, the sliding of limp feet dragging on the ground. I don’t know where I am, but lately it doesn’t matter anymore. Not since the fever hit. All anyone cares about now is survival. Laws no longer exist. I’m guessing I’m somewhere in north America, maybe the mid-west.
I haven’t strayed very far from the Canadian border. Hoping to find the rest of my group. Maybe someone who might recognize me.
I spot an old cabin through a gap in the woods that are on either side of the highway I walk along. It’s worth a shot to check it out. I need a place to stay the night and hopefully the cabin is geek free and secure enough to keep them out.
I pull the crossbow I found on a downed geek and hold it in front of me ready for anything that might be dangerous. I make my way through the woods to the front of the cabin. The door is wide open and partially off its hinges. A dead geek lays in a pool of brown dried blood. It’s mostly eaten away. More Geeks are around here. Hopefully not too hungry.
Carefully I step around the corpse and start to head to the kitchen. Always go there first. Get the food immediately. So if you get attacked, you’ll have a meal for tomorrow. Usually only one meal for a day. I can’t afford to eat any more than that. It’s either be more full but eventually starve. Or be hungry, and live.
The cupboards are all empty. People have been here before, and they took everything. A small creak can be heard behind me and everything becomes clear. Two things could be behind me. A geek, or a human and I don’t know what’s worse.
I pivot on my heels pointing my crossbow straight ahead of me. My eyes lock on the geek down the hall from me. She’s a young girl. Maybe six years old. I hate these ones. They’re young. Defenseless and when the geek got them, they probably had nobody to protect them. A meal just waiting for them.
I pull the trigger and the arrow goes through her neck pinning her to the wall. I watch as she croaks and walks forward. The arrow tearing a hold in her neck. I aim again and get into the eye socket. She stands staring at me with red bloodshot eyes, a small whine escapes the girls lips as she falls to the ground. I walk over so I stand above her corpse.
I lean down and grab the arrow yanking it out of her socket. I wipe the arrow on the carpet cleaning it of blood. I walk grabbing the arrow out of the wall. I sheath it and walk out of the house.
You can’t ever look back at a kill. It always makes it harder.

I walk through the city of saint paul. The ruins of a city that must have been amazing at one point. In the distance I can see towering skyscrapers. I know not to go there though. One person walked into that town with the fever, they all got infected and they never left. Eventually they feed on each other. Then they walk out of the city. They look for live prey. Every city is like that. Every one I’ve been to.
Every time I wish I could have seen them when they were alive. I wish I could have seen the people walking around doing their every day lives. I wish I could see the woman bustling to work. The man with his daughter taking her out for the day to buy her new toys.
Now everything is ruin. Everything is dead. I wish I knew life. A bird flys above my head waking me from my waking dreams. I hear the collection of moans of a horde of geeks, far enough away from me, so that I can hear them but not so that I’m worried. I look to my left to see a building with a ladder that goes up to a fire escape.
I quickly climb it breaking the window on my way. I run through the building staying on the first floor. As quietly as I can praying there aren’t any in here. Through a window I see a horde pressed against the doors of a large building labeled Wal*Mart and I see the eyes of an afraid very alive man inside. I have Ten arrows. I see fifteen geeks. I’m not as good of a shot to get them all from here.
Why should I help this man?
Maybe I’ll finally have a companion of my own. One who stays. Someone who doesn’t have to save my life and give up his own.
Before I think I take the butt of my crossbow and break the window in front of me, pieces shattering around me. Some even piercing my skin. A few of the geeks in the back of the group turn and begin the shuffle in my direction.
“HEY” I scream getting the attention of a few more. I take down the first geek that gets in my shooting distance. Quickly I load another arrow and point it at the second geek taking it down with its friend.
I look over to the building and see four men and a woman run out of the building, the girl carries an axe and takes a geek down immediately, the four boys run after the nearest ones to them. I focus on the few in front of me and dare the five foot jump to the ground. I pull a knife out of my belt and hold it in between my teeth. I shoot the next one nearest me.
That’s when I begin my sprint to the first geek I took down, yanking the arrow out and taking my foot down on its weak scull. I load the arrow and shoot the next one nearest me, before pulling an arrow out of the second geek and stabbing it through the next geek closest to me by hand.
Five geeks down. Three arrows used.
“Sarah!” A boy screams, I look up at the group just soon enough to see a geek take a bite out of the girl. A bulky man takes the last one down. I walk over to my three other kills retrieving my arrows.
“Elijah!” A man with a lip piercing and a high-arched nose shouts at the boy who ran over to the girl, “Be careful.” He warns. I stay still and stare at the boy who takes the girl in his arms breaking out in tears.
“She’s going to turn in 10 seconds. Get off of her.” I warn, “You can grive when she’s safe.”
“Don’t you fucking dare!” The boy screams at me.
“Eli. Quiet.” The big gulky man hushes. “We can’t attract more.”
“Shut up Zackary.” Elijah sobs
“7…6…” I say loud enough for them to hear.
“Give him a second…” The man with a piercing snaps at me
“4… 3…”
“STOP!” The boy screams getting on his knees still holding the girl.
“1…” I whisper and a moan escapes the girls lips. I raise the crossbow in my hands.
“Please, sarah. You’re okay? You’re alive.” He smiles down at her just as her eyes lock on his arm. She begins to lunge at it him when I pull the trigger. The corpse falls on the ground in front of him.
“We can’t loose the lives of more humans.” I apologize. The boy looks up at me with wide, pained eyes. “I’m sorry.”
