Chapter 7: Astronaut
“Hey Emmett!” I greeted happily, flopping down on my bed with my phone to my ear. Emmett was one of my closest friends. I had met him because of Drake, since the two are best friends. Somehow, Emmett and I continued to be friends despite the fact that Drake and I broke up.
“Hello Nora! I’m glad I caught you,” he commented. “What’s up?”
“Oh you know, the usual. I’ve just had school and stuff on my plate. What about you? I haven’t even seen you around!” I replied. It was often hard to find Emmett since he was a Junior.
“Same thing really. Hey, you should hang out with me at lunch on Monday! I think I can abandon my group for an hour to see you,” he mentioned.
I blushed unintentionally. “That would be great. My friends will just have to go without me for awhile. But, how’s life going for you anyway?”
“It’s life I guess. Sadly, I must go. I’m sorry I didn’t have much time to talk to you, but I’ll make it up to you on Monday, I promise! See you later!” he said.
“Bye,” I said, setting my phone beside me on the bed. I stood up from the bed and got onto my laptop, immediately opening up Facebook.
Luna’s chat window popped up quickly. “Hey! How was Jack’s house?”
“It was fine, but I think we have bigger problems,” I replied.
“Why? What’s wrong?” she typed back.
“Emmett called me on the phone. I definitely still like him,” I mentioned.
“That’s not really a bad thing. What did he say when he called?” she asked.
“He wants to hang out together at lunch on Monday,” I said.
“Sounds like he likes you too. :P I hope you know I’m only allowing you to go because I know you will tell me all the details later,” she joked.
“Lol I know,” I responded. “What do you think the guys will say?”
“They probably won’t care too much. Just relax dude. It will be great,” she said.
“I hope you’re right,” I mentioned.

After 3rd hour, I rushed out of the classroom excitedly, leaving Rian in a wake of dust. I looked for the room number where I was told to meet Emmett at and quickly found him filing out of his classroom.
“You made it!” He grinned happily. His bark brown hair was curling just above his ears, at the perfect length. His bright green eyes shone brightly behind his glasses.
I smiled at him. “Of course I did! I wouldn’t miss this for the world!”
“How about we go get food at the gas station? I’ll buy,” he suggested.
“Such a gentleman!” I joked.
We made our merry way across the street, talking about whatever. I got a coffee and a can of Pringles, offering to pay him back, though he refused. “Come on, you’re my friend. I gotta treat well at least once in awhile,” he said.
“You sure know how to treat a girl right, Emmett,” I replied.
We walked back and began wandering across the school lawn. We discussed music, games, and TV shows, which was very nice. I had almost forgotten how great it was to be with Emmett, just hanging out. He made me blush constantly, though I don’t think he noticed. But I couldn’t help but feel horrible. I mean, he was my ex’s best friend, how could it possibly work for the two of us? When the bell finally rang, we said goodbye and he promised to talk to me later. I couldn’t wait.
I was almost late for Biology later that afternoon, surprised to find Jack already sitting at our table. “Where the hell were you at lunch?” he questioned.
“I thought Luna would fill you all in. I was with a friend of mine that I needed to catch up with,” I explained.
“A friend, huh? Then why didn’t you just bring them around to our group?” he asked.
“Chill dude. Emmett and I agreed to hang out just the two of us, okay?” I replied.
“You like him, don’t you?” he wondered.
“That’s not the point,” I said. “Why are you freaking out so much?”
“I’m not freaking out, Nora. I was just curious,” he huffed.
It was quiet between the two of us the rest of class, but as I was walking out, I saw him stop and talk to a girl I could only assume was Kasey. I strangely didn’t mind it so much this time, and I couldn’t help but wonder if it was because I was distracted by Emmett. But, that couldn’t be it, could it?
