Sweet Goodbye

One

"Jack, get your worthless ass up. You're going to be late for school. I don't want a dumb child." My mother yelled from the living room. I rolled over onto my back, and traced the scars on my wrists.

Taking a deep breath, I climbed out of bed and made my way over to my closet.
I pulled on a pair of black skinny jeans, and my favorite Blink-182 t-shirt. I checked to see how cold it was outside, and decided to pull on my black mickey mouse sweatshirt.

I ruffled my hair quickly, and pulled on my black high top converse, before quickly brushing my teeth and rushin out the front door to catch the bus. I walked down my long driveway, to the bus stop.

I noticed today, that there was a kid there, which was strange cause it was always only me who got on here. I approched the stop slowly, making sure he wouldn't hurt me.
He turned and smiled at me. His light brown fringe falling perfectly against his face. His eyes were almost the same shade of brown as mine were, and he had big eyebrows like me. I looked down at his sweatshirt, and smiled. He was wearing the same one as me.

"I like your sweatshirt." I said, smiling. It probably looked stupid.

"Thanks, yours isn't to bad yourself. I'm Alex." He said, extending his arm. I shook it.

"Jack." I said, still smiling. The boy had a thick english accent, which made my stomach flutter.

"You a freshman?" He asked, looking down at his worn down sneakers. I nodded.

"Yeah, I take it your new. Judging by your accent." Alex chuckled, and his face slowly fell.

"Yeah." He said, his voice cracking just a bit.

"I'm sorry, are you alright?" I asked, placing my hand on his shoulder. He flinched away from my touch, and I immediatly pulled back my hand. "Sorry."

"No, no. It's okay. I'm sorry." He said, his voice wavering ever so slightly.

"Hey, nothing to be sorry about. I shouldn't have touched you. Wanna share a seat on the bus?" I asked him. A smile appeared once again on his face, as he nodded.

"Sure, that would be great." He said.

"So, where are you from?" I asked him.

"I'm from just outside of London, England." He said. I must have gasped, because a laugh escaped his lips.

"Why did you move here, if you don't mind me asking?" I said, holding up my hands. He shrugged.

"We needed a different scenery I guess." He said, not going any further. We stood in silence, until the bus came around the corner. We sat in the back of the bus. Chester, the quarterback of the football team, turned to look at us.

"Looks like you've got yourself a butt buddy, ay Barakat?" He said, making everyone laugh.

"Shut the hell up, Chester. I don't need your bull shit this morning." I said, regretting as soon as the words left my mouth. He got up, and sat in the seat in front of us, grabbing a hold of my shirt and pulling me so our faces were inches apart.

"What the fuck did you just say to me, Barakat?" He hissed.

"You heard me, you uneducated swine." I said back, feeling more brave. He wound his fist back, and I closed my eyes waiting for the impact. Instead, I felt his grip on my shirt dissappear, and I heard a thud. I slowly opened my eyes to see Alex holding his fist, and Chester with a bloody nose. I smiled, and then I realized what he had just done.

"No, no, no, no. You shouldn't have done that. He's going to make your life a living hell." I said, the words flying out of my mouth so fast. Alex shrugged.

"Whatever, can't make my life worse than it already is." He said, nonchalantly. I went quiet, taking in what he had just said. I was trying to think about it, but I couldn't with the yelling from Chester. When the bus arrived to the school, Chester was let off first, and me and Alex were held back.

"So, do you want to tell me what went on back here boys?" The bus driver asked.

"He was going to punch, Jack." Alex said, staring up at the bus driver.

"Why's that?" He asked, not buying his story. The bus driver hated me.

"As soon as we got on the bus, Sir, he started calling us gay, so Jack stood up for himself." The bus drivers face hardened, obviously not buying the truth.

"Well, you boys are suspended for the week. Call your parents, cause I don't want you little fucks on my bus anymore." He said angrily, as he turned to let us out. Alex looked terrified, and I could feel the bile rising in my throat, remembering back to what my mother had said this morning. It looked as if Alex was about to cry.

"Hey, are you okay?" I asked him, putting my hand on his shoulder. He didn't flinch this time. He shook his head, and turned away from me.

"I'm so fucked." He said. I nodded.

"Yeah, me too. Want to walk home together, seems how we live near eachother?" I asked. Alex nodded.

"Yeah, that would be nice." He said. We turned, and started back home. I was so scared for my safety right now, because I didn't know what my mom would do to me when she found out I got suspended. I shook the possibilities out of my head, and enjoyed the fact that I had made a new friend.
