All This Madness

It Never Ends.

The bus was completely dark, the one form of light was coming through the window from the moon. Almost everyone was asleep. Rian and I had agreed to keep watch while Matt and Tori got some rest and Zack was currently driving us to another unknown destination.

Eventually, however, I was left alone. Rian was already exhausted from driving, staring at the same door and broken window didn't help any. He passed out beside me with his gun in his hand.

With Jack and Alex being gone, it was hard to deal with the bus being so quiet. I missed their whispers, their attempts to make everyone smile. I even missed taking care of Jack when he was sick. Having your friends ripped away by an illness, by death, that was one thing. But to know that they're out there, somewhere, fighting for their lives.. That gave me no peace. I was lucky to have caught a few naps here and there since they left. Mostly, I thrived on the fact that we had to make stops ever so often to fuel up the bus and grap supplies. We even managed to find another gun store, which we were in desperate need of.

Still, I couldn't take the silence. A sigh fell from my lips as I stood up quietly, making sure not to wake Rian from his much needed sleep. I tip-toed my way to the front of the bus, to join Zack as he stared at the road. He didn't speak as I sat down, he just shot me a sad glance. I understood, anyway. We'd driven for miles and miles, yet we still hadn't come across another living human being. It left us all with one, unsettling thought: Alex and Jack would never find who they were looking for. They were doomed, just as we all were.

Even the streets, that'd we'd grown so used to being filled with abondoned cars, were empty. Most of the vehicles were run off the streets and covered with blood. When the outbreak hit here, it must have been horrible. Occasionally we'd see a dead body on the side of the road, eaten so badly the victim probably didn't even turn, and if they did, they were too torn up to fight for food. They simply died from hunger. The infected weren't very thick around here, either. Some would wander the road and come after the bus, but it appeared they'd taken out their main sorce of food. They were skinny and weak.

The moon even felt wrong in this situation. The trees, the headlights, the stars.. None of them belonged anymore. These beautiful, simple things that we used to take for granted, they now haunted us. Reminded us that the world as we knew it was over.

"I can't keep doing this," Zack sighed, gripping the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned white. "I can't keep aimlessly driving towards something I'll never find."

"You've seen them, though, Zack. They're starving. They'll die out soon."

"Yeah, maybe in this area, maybe one town over. But you've seen what they were like in other places. We'll never escape them, Riot."

"Don't say that," I frowned, slipping further into the seat. "We'll find another solution. We know the cure is possible now. Somewhere, anywhere, there has to be more people looking for the same thing we are."

Zack didn't speak, he just nodded his head and let a sigh fall from his lips. It was easy to tell him to keep pushing forward, but even I had to admit I was feeling the same way. We all were. Maybe that's why Jack and Alex left in the first place. They needed more out of this life, they needed a purpose. I just hope they've found it. We all just hope they're alive. As the sadness took over me, I drifted into a soft, miserable sleep.

________

I awoke to a pair of hands shaking by body. My first instinct was to reach for my gun, but the hand stopped me and the small laugh that echoed through the area relaxed me. It was just Zack.

When my eyes fluttered open, I realized we weren't moving anymore. Actually, we were parked in front of a largue building, though the sun coming through the windshield blocked out the lettering on the wall. Zack's smile, however, told me he had a plan.

"Everyone else is up and waiting. Come on!"

He tugged on my hand until I stood and followed him through the bus. Sure enough, the rest of the group was standing by the door, patiently waiting for us to join them. I noticed that Matt and Rian had guns in their hands, a sure sign that we were about to venture outside. My assumption was correction as Zack opened the door and pulled me out with him.

This place was strange. The parking lot had a few crashed cars and some blood smears on the pavement, but there was no sign of life around. Dead or alive. A chill crept up my spine and I lingered back so that Tori and Matt could catch up to me. Knowing that I was unsure with the area, Matt grabbed my hand and gave it a soft squeeze.

None of us spoke as Zack made his way to a set of doors, which to our surprise, were unlocked. We entered the area with our guns raised, though it was pointless. No one, nothing, was here. That's when I realized where we were. A mall.

"What are we doing here?" I whispered, stepping closer to Tori.

"I'm sick of these clothes," Zack spoke with a shrug. "Plus, I'm willing to bet we can get a fuck ton of water out of the vending machines, maybe even find some toothpaste or mouth wash. I dunno."

I watched closely as Zack parted from the group, heading straight towards the men's clothing section. Rian soon followed after him. Honestly, it bothered me that no one else seemed to care about the fact that it was too quiet around here. It seemed impossible for no infected to be in the area, or at the very least, more survivors. Still, not even that could change the fact that Tori was yanking on my hand and pointing towards the girls clothes. I gave a soft sigh and allowed her to lead me to them.

Eventually Matt had to grab some bags from the check-out counter because Tori had loaded up on clothes, a new pair of tennis shoes and underwear. He gave me one as well, telling me that I should find something new to wear and ventured off to find himself something, too.

As the hours passed, I grew more at ease. We all went further into the mall, heading into random stores to collect more things. I took Tori to a toy store and let her get a few things. She even got new movies to watch.

By the time we made our way to the vending machines to gather the water, we all had more new things that we had planned. But I must admit, the simple knowing that I'd have clean underwear, it made me freakishly happy. We even the children's play area and daycare and robbed them blind of baby wipes (so we could clean ourselves) and children's tooth brushes and toothpaste. At the very least, we'd be clean. Even our hair, thanks to Rian for stumbling upon a wig store.

Things were going wonderfully, until Tori declared that she had to pee. It'd be a nice break, since all of our arms were getting tired from carrying the bags. The thing is, though, Tori never got to go to the bathroom. We opened the double doors that would take us to the restrooms.. And, well, we finally found the infected. It was easy to assume that most of them had worked here before they turned.

"Quietly," Rian whispered, pulling Tori away from the doors as he attempted to shut them, "head back to the bus."

We managed to get the door shut and take off as quickly as we could, Rian trailing behind us. In the distance, I could hear the infected snarling and growling for our flesh, but we were faster. Back through the store we can in and out of the doors to the bus. I don't know how, but we made it. No one got bitten or injured. We were alive.

"Rian, step on it!"

Matt had Tori in his arms as we pulled away, the infected shoving each other through the doors. There was no way of knowing how long they'd been locked in there, how long they'd been without food.. It was a sad realization that Zack was right, we could never escape this Hell.
