All This Madness

Hope For the Human Race.

We stood outside of the building with fear in our eyes. There were cars parked all over the place, but not a person in sight, dead or alive. Rian was banging on the doors, as if that would help us at all, pleading to be let inside. Honestly, I wasn't even sure why we were here anymore. God only knows when that message was left in CVS or what had happened since. Who's to say there was even still anyone here? This place was just as broken as the other towns we'd traveled through to get here.

Actually, the only reason I'd left the bus was for my baby sister. It seems that Matt's incredible idea of giving her raw meat had worked. She was much more tame, though still a little rabid. She stood in front of me, with her head resting on my chest, though I could feel her body jerking and hear the growls leaving her lips. What gave me hope wasn't the fact that her hunger could be kept under control. It was that she could verbally thank Matt for his kindness. It was the way she whispered her love for me, even when she lashed out. My Tori was still in there, even if she was drifting. The young girl needed help, someone needed to figure it out. The new staff was my only hope for Tori's survival.

We were just about to give up hope when the doors slowly opened. Rian turned to look at us, with pride in his eyes, just before taking the first step into the building. The rest of us followed behind him, stepping as slowly and as quietly as we could. For a moment, we thought there was no one around. But then, a panic filled our guts as men in white suits jumped us.

Everyone was shoved up against a wall as their bodies were patted down. Everyone but me and Tori.

The man who should have been checking us, going over my weapons just like they were with the guys, stood frozen in his place. His eyes were locked on Tori and his fingers were slowly inching toward the gun by his side. The only thing stopping him from shooting her was the gun in my hand, pointed right at his forehead.

"Make one more move and I'll feed her your remains."

"Now, that's no way to treat your hosts."

My gun was still firmly pointed at the man's face, though the rest of the guys had been set free, weapons still in tact, which I assume was because of the fact that I could kill them in the blink of an eye. Said host backed away from Tori and myself, to make way for the new person who was moving rather quickly towards me. I would have pulled out another gun, but I refused to let go of Tori, not in a place like this.

"Who is this little angel?"

"Don't you dare touch her," I growled, jerking Tori to my side. "If your first reaction is to pull a gun on the child, we'll leave."

"Allow me to apologize. Where are my manners?" The man gave a warm laugh and took one big step away from Tori. "My name's Steven Wade. I mean you no harm. You have to understand, my men are used to being attacked when they see someone in the same state as the child."

"She's not like the others," I countered, lowering my gun the slightest bit. "She needs help."

"We all need help, girl. That's why we've chosen this as our safe haven. You see, when this thing was released, no one even had the time to notice that no one involved with the CDC was totally out of harms way. This building, in fact, had more families than I can count living like the wealthy while the rest of us were fighting for our lives. We came here, not to have the safety they once had, but because we had hope they'd have the cure somewhere in the building. It only made sense, didn't it?"

"Where are those families now?"

"That's not what's important. No, what matters my dear girl is that this is a safe place, where you can shower freely and get a full stomach. Join us, won't you?"

"I didn't come here so I could smell nice. I came here for answers."

Though a shower sounded nice and this man seemed healthy, and in the most creepy of ways, happy, the way his eyes kept flickering to Tori made my stomach churn. I didn't bring her here to be a trophy on a shelf. I brought her here for help.

"And you think the child can supply them?"

"Actually, I was hoping you could."

"She's infected," he completely ignored my words and bent down in front of Tori, despite the way my arm tightened around her body. "Yet.. She doesn't attack. She.. She still feels emotions, I can see it in her eyes, she's scared. Why doesn't she attack?"

I let my eyes trail to Jack, who was still weak, but hopeful. The virus hadn't gotten to him, which we were all thanful for. That didn't change the fact that he was now scared shitless of Tori.

"Sh- She has attacked, but only once. And she spoke to me when it was over. She was just hungry. Since then, we've been giving her raw meat. It seems to be working pretty well."

"You there, without the thumb," Steven stood to look at Jack. Apparently he noticed the apologetic look on my face only a moment ago. "It was you she got, then? Are you infected?"

"Not with the virus," Jack smiled faintly. "She wasn't brutal about it. In no way was she trying to kill me. She just couldn't stop herself."

"That doesn't make her any less of a threat to my men, though," Steven sighed, pushing himself back up. "If you really want my help with the child, she will have to be quarantined. We have plenty of raw meat to keep her fed for the night and we can start running tests on her tomorrow."

"Her name is Tori," I whispered, pulling my baby sister closer. She was trembling, which meant she understood what the man was saying. "Will I still be able to see her, to keep an eye on her?"

"But of course my dear girl. I can see how protective of her you are." Steven offered me a smile, but I didn't want it. "I'm not going to lie to you. It will not be easy on the child. Some of the tests will be painful, but I assure you, I will keep her out of harms way. To know that the cure might be in her blood, well, that's a bigger gift than her still being alive."

"So.. Do you think you can help her?"

"It may take a while, honestly. We'll have to run several tests on her blood, try to find whatever it is inside of her that's keeping her alive, but I think there's hope. This child, Tori, she's special."

My heart was fluttering against my ribcage. It all sounded so promising, but leaving Tori alone would nearly kill me. How could I just let these people take her away from me? Sure, I'd still be able to see her, but I wouldn't be able to comfort her.. However, if they can help her, save her, even, it was worth it.

Matt seemed to be the only other person in the room picking up on my hesitation. He stepped forward, though his body was shaking.

"I request to be present when you run the tests," he finally spoke, forcing a smile to form on my lips. "I don't want you to touch her unless I'm there."

"Who are you?" Steven asked, eyeing Matt with caution. "The brother? The father?"

"You could say I'm a little bit of both," Matt shrugged. "That little girl is the only thing keeping me going. Please, let me be there."

"All right, you can be present, but you must not get in the way of my men. They know what they're doing and even if the girl cries, it's for her own good, I assure you. She has just become the last hope for the human race. She is a prize."

I was still scared, scared for myself and for my sister, but I had to let her go. The men in suits took her away from me, and though Tori didn't want to go, she didn't fight them. As she disappeared from my view, I found myself running into Matt's arms, begging for some sense of comfort in all of this madness.

Matt squeezed me, rubbing small circles on my back. If anyone here understood what it was like to let her go, it was him.

The guys slowly circled in around us, each of them placing a hand on either mine or Matt's back, just to remind us that they'd be here till the end. It was almost insane how quickly these boys had become my family: Our family.

"She will be fed and put to bed. The rest of you will be shown to your own rooms. You may shower and change, then join us for dinner. I do hope you enjoy our stay here."
