A Better Reality

I'll Set You Free

“Come on Jinksy, get in your carrier,” I said to my gray Persian cat. He is so stubborn, I finally got him in his carrier and took him downstairs and put him in my loaded Toyota Highlander. I turned around and let out the breath I had been holding for what felt like all day.

“This is it, on to a new life,” I said and climbed in my car and drove off watching my childhood house become smaller and smaller in my rearview mirror.

Hi, my name is Eleanor Abigail Lewis and I’m 16 years old. I’m moving across town into a suburb near Towson, Maryland to live with my father and his wife. My mother had kicked me out for reasons I would rather not discuss with you, or anyone. I have been dancing since I was 4 years old and I plan on making a career out of it at Julliard when I graduate in 2 and half years. I will be attending my first public school but that’s why I’m living with my father, to experience new things. Most people don’t like me because I come off as a bitch, excuse my French, but they don’t know me and I don’t want them knowing me. I am who I am because of things that have happened in my life. I lock myself in my room and practice my dance routines for hours, therefore blocking off all communication with anyone near me. I will be attending Delaney High School with my step brother Robert, or you may know him as Rian. To say I was scared would be an understatement.

After driving an hour I had finally reached my destination, I pulled into the driveway of my new home, it was a lot bigger than the townhouse I lived in with my mother and step father, but I like big. My father was waiting on the front porch awaiting my arrival. I climbed out of my car and stretched a little until I was pulled into a hug by my father, Bruce.

“My little girl,” my father said while squeezing me a bit too hard.

“Hi daddy,” I said while allowing a smile to take over my face. What can I say, I’m a daddy’s girl.

“Go on inside, Cathy will show you your room and I’ll get your things brought inside. I’m so glad to have you here,” he said after ruffling my already messy hair. I nodded my head and cautiously walked into my new home. I took in my surroundings and the house was lovely, had a homey feeling to it and I could smell pumpkin and cinnamon filling the air.

“There she is! Hello Eleanor, so good to see you again!” Cathy, Robert’s mother, said to me while hugging me.

“The same for you Cathy. I see you’ve cut your hair. It looks marvelous,” I said to her acknowledging her shorter haircut.

“You are so well mannered, I wish you could teach Rian a thing a two. Now follow me and I will show you your room, sweetie.”

I followed Cathy up the staircase and down the hall. She stopped at a wooden door and slowly opened it, revealing a rather large room with a queen sized bed placed against the back wall, a dresser against the wall the door was on, a closet on the wall to the right and a door on the left wall I assumed connected to the bathroom. It had a big window next to my bed, and I immediately started thinking of how I would decorate it.

“Now it’s not a whole lot, but it’s got all the necessary furniture you would need and I figured we could go into town and get you some other things to paint it and decorate it,” Cathy said while standing in the middle of the room with me.

“It’s lovely. You would really let me paint such a beautiful room?” I asked her, adverting my attention back to my step mother.

“Of course darling, this is your room, we must make it resemble you!” She said while clapping her hands together. I’ve always liked Cathy, so genuine and kind, unlike my step-father. My father quickly brought my bags up to my room along with Jinksy who I let out of his carrier.

“I hope you don’t mind cats, he is very well behaved,” I said to my dad and Cathy who just waved it off. They left me to unpack my things. I hung up all my nice clothes in my closet, lining my shoes underneath them. I placed all my dance clothes, pajamas, under garments and lounge clothes into my dresser. I then placed my jewelry box on top of my dresser and neatly arranged my make up next to my jewelry box in front of the mirror on top of my dresser. I walked into the bathroom and placed my shower accessories in the shower, my sink accessories by the sink, my feminine products went underneath the sink in the cabinet and my straightener and curling iron next to the sink. By the looks of the other contents in the bathroom, I would be sharing with Robert, or Rian. My apologies. I then walked into my room and set Jinksy’s items up in the corner next to my bed. After getting things where I wanted them I walked downstairs and joined my dad and Cathy in the kitchen.

“Everything put away kiddo?” My dad asked, not taking his attention away from the paper in front of his eyes.

“Yes.” I said while taking a seat at the island.

“Want something to drink honey? I just made some tea,” Cathy said from the stove.

“That’d be fantastic,” I said and took the cup she offered me and dropped some honey in the tea.

“So I was thinking, if you’d like we could go into town and get you some things for your room and get to work? I want you to be as comfortable as possible,” Cathy said occupying the seat next to me.

“That would be fantastic actually!” I exclaimed to her and gave her a quick hug. After I finished my tea I placed it in the dish washer then went upstairs to grab my purse and meet Cathy in her car to head off to town.

“Cathy, when does Robe—Rian get home from school? I haven’t seen him in forever,” I asked her from the passenger seat.

“He’ll be home at 3 o’ clock, but he has band practice until 6 o’ clock,” she said, answering my question.

“Oh that’s right, he’s in a band! How could I forget!” I said. I wonder if they are any good. We continued to chit chat a little bit while we walked around some shopping malls in Towson. I bought some sheets, a comforter, pillows, a lamp, a couple of rugs and some chairs from a local décor store. Then we went off to a hardware store to collect some paint and painting supplies. I got a beautiful yellow color to paint my room, it matched all my bedding, in plus yellow is my favorite color. After our day of collecting some more things for my room we headed home-- my new home.

When we pulled into the driveway I noticed a few more cars parked outside and could only assume it was the cars of Rian and his friends. I walked inside with my arms full of stuff and quickly brought them up to my new room where Cathy followed me.

“Honey change your clothes before we start painting, I wouldn’t want you to ruin anything, and I will go change mine so I’ll be right back,” Cathy said while walking out of my room. I walked over to my dresser and grabbed some grubby clothes to change into, placing my clothes from earlier into my clothes hamper.

“Where is she?!” I heard someone yell, then I heard loud thuds coming up the stairs and down the hall.

“Eleanor!!” Rian yelled when he entered my room and picked me up and spun me around.

“Hello Rian, it’s so nice to see you,” I said to him once he set me down and I stopped laughing.

“I’m so glad you’re living with us now! I’ve missed my sis!” He yelled while taking in my appearance. Yes, Rian calls me sis, we’ve been step siblings since an early age of 6 years old.

“I see you haven’t changed a bit,” I said to him taking in his appearance as well.

“Same goes for you! You got taller though,” he said while hugging me again. “Look I’d love to catch up but I have band practice, I’ll talk to you afterwards!” He said while running out of my room. I couldn’t help but laugh at him.

Cathy joined me again and we quickly got to work on getting my room just the way I wanted it.

I think I’m going to enjoy it here.
