My Fair Chance

Butterflies and Fireworks

It was the night before the wedding and Brooklyn was doing her best to hang on every word Cassadee was speaking. She knew her new best friend was stressed and anxious, maybe even getting cold feet, but she couldn't bring herself to swim in a sea of someone else's worries. That alone freaked her out. Brooklyn wasn't the type of person to worry about things in her own life. She was a free spirit, she went where the wind took her and she was constantly smiling, because she honestly believed the small things in life were there to make her happy. But she was just so confused.

Perhaps it would have helped things if she and Zack had actually seen each other since the night she spent with Alex, but they hadn't. Zack had gotten a call that next morning and was sent off to straighten up Rian's apartment before he and Cass returned home. Brooklyn had Alex take her home. From there, she was called into work, which she gladly accepted. A week later, here they were, in a beautiful hotel counting down the hours until Cassadee said 'I do.'

It was a nice room, the one she was sharing with Cass. Two full sized beds with a beautiful red blanket, clean walls and white, fluffy carpet. There was a large flat screen television hanging on the wall, a kitchen, a large bathroom and a living room as well. It was the kind of place that Brooklyn would never be able to afford on her own, not even for one night, but she had to admit, that carpet was well worth the price. It was so soft on her feet, a small was to relax, another thing to value.

Still, not even the fluffy carpet or Cassadee's problems could pull her from her mind. Brooklyn liked Zack, she knew that much to be true. She thought about him when he wasn't around, missed him after he said goodbye and got butterflies in her belly when he texted her. The problem was, now she was starting to feel the same way about Alex. She barely knew the guy, but already, he'd been more open with her about his feelings than Zack had ever been. If there's one thing Brooklyn was certain of, it's how short life was and how quickly a moment can pass you by. Living in the moment meant embracing it, something Alex had the guts to do that Zack didn't.

The real problem was, she had a lot in common with Alex. She liked simple and he was simple-minded. Zack was a deep thinker, passionate and all those other things that she loved. They were both two, amazing men and she knew her heart was pushing for both of them. She didn't even know why she was letting Alex get in the way of her time with Zack. She barely knew him, as opposed to Zack, who she'd been spending so much time with she had a spare toothbrush at his house.

"I don't even know why I'm so nervous," Cass giggled, taking another sip of the wine she'd ordered about an hour ago. "Rian is my one. Our relationship is easy, we don't have to battle over anything. I mean, we fight, obviously. But it's not hard. We make each other happy. I know I'm doing the right thing. I know he's my happily-ever-after."

"See?" Brooklyn put on her best smile and finished off what was left in her own glass. "I told you there was nothing to worry about, but if you'll excuse me, I'm going to get us some more ice. The wine is getting hot."

"Good idea. Hurry back!"

A small laugh fell from Brooklyn's lips as she slipped out of the door. She was greeted with the scent of a vacuum cleaner and a maid that didn't look pleased to see her venturing out of her room. Shrugging it off, Brooklyn gave her a soft smile and hurried down the hall. She called for the elevator and patiently waited for the doors to open.

The ride to the next floor was quick. Brooklyn made her way to the break room and grabbed a bag of ice, which was free to any guests in the building. She found a strange comfort in coldness on her hands. Shifting her weight, she carried the bag back to the elevator, almost excited to get back to Cass and drink another glass of wine. It would be in her best interest, at least for the next twenty-four hours, to forget about both Zack and Alex. This weekend was about Rian and Cassadee, she shouldn't let anything get in the way of that.

When the silver doors slid open, Brooklyn did not expect to see Zack Merrick on the other side. Despite how awkward it was, they both ended up smiling and shuffling out of the other's way. Brooklyn couldn't help but think it was cute, the way Zack blushed the instant he saw her.

"I was hoping I'd bump into you," Zack breathed, averting his gaze. "We've been a little weird since that night at Alex's."

"Yeah, I guess we have. But we've both been busy so it's not like either of us planned to go so long without seeing each other."

"That's true, but the truth is, I'm kind of glad we didn't see each other. I've been thinking a lot about what you said and I realize I haven't been putting my feelings out there like I should have been. If I'm being honest.. I've been afraid to tell you how I feel, because you're a perfect ten and I'm nothing. Even to this day, I can't grasp why a girl like you would even give me the time of day.. But that doesn't change how I feel about you and I see now that it doesn't change how you feel about me."

Brooklyn could feel her heart pounding against her chest so hard it almost hurt. Judging by the blush on Zack's cheeks, he felt the same way. It was a relief to hear him say these things, to have it all out in the open, though it made her almost-kiss with Alex more shameful.
Even that, however, was erased from her mind when Zack took a step forward. Several steps, actually, enough to back her into the wall. Her chest was rising and falling heavily as she dropped the ice by her foot and stared into Zack's eyes. He had one hand on the wall beside her head and the other was gripping her cheek, his calloused thumb brushing against her bone.

"You are the most amazing person I've ever met, Brooke," Zack whispered, his breath sending chills down her spine. This was the moment she'd been waiting for, yet, she felt she would be hurting Alex in some way. "I'll do whatever it takes to make you mine."

Before the girl could respond, his lips were on hers and fireworks were being set off inside of her mind.
