The Forgotten Five

Barakat's on the Run

Samantha's (Sam’s) POV~

At school I ran into my one friend, or at least she was the only one who would have a conversation with me. She gave me a small smile and we both headed to our lockers in silence, we were locker neighbors. The silence ended when she closed her door with a heavy sigh, one that didn’t sound good to me. She directed her gaze at me, looked down, then looked back up.
“I have to tell you something....” she started, it seemed like she was hesitating, but for what reason? “I...don’t want you to talk to me anymore....” Her eyes shifted downwards again, this time not picking up again.
I wanted to say something, anything, ask her why or what happened to change her mind, but the words wouldn’t leave my mouth. I just stood there with open eyes as she calmly walked away.
Eventually the warning bell signaled us to hurry up and I had to run to make it my first class. But a dark feeling had settled inside of me, one that would take awhile to get used to.

Rocket’s POV~

School ended faster than most days, it just seemed to rush by. Sammy meet me by the gates, but her face held only despair. Something immediately didn’t settle.
“What’s wrong Sam? Did something happen?” I asked, her brown eyes looked duller than usual.
“No...not much....” Her voice was soft, low, unusual.
“Lets....go home then...” I reached for her hand but she jerked it away.
“No....I don’t want to go back....not to her..” Her voice was louder this time.
“Then where do you want to go?” I said it like I was talking to a two-year old. Her blonde bangs casted a shadow over her face.
“Away....far away...somewhere she can’t find us....”

Sam’s POV~

Rocket pulled away slightly, she probably thought I was crazy, I wouldn’t blame her either. Then she did the unexpected, she smiled, a genuine smile.
“That sound like a great plan, honey.” She grabbed my hand and ran, ran all the way back to our house. “Stay here...” She lead me behind a bush and took off her backpack, emptying the contents on the front lawn, then slowly crept back into the worn down house.
“Rocket...”I whispered, but the only thing I saw was the last few strands of her long red hair, “be safe.....” I prayed, and sat down behind the bush.

Awhile later Rocket emerged from the house, thankfully unharmed. “She was still asleep upstairs...” She whispered, slinging her backpack around her shoulder. “You should keep your backpack too.” I nodded.
“Ok...where do we go now?” Rocket smirked.
“To the forest, we’ll stay there until we figure out where we truly want to go.” In my eyes, Rocket looked like a hero, one that could overcome any obstacle, one that would protect me till the end.
“Ok!” I smiled as she took my hand and, together, we walked off into the woods that covered the back of everyone’s house.
