Neverland

The First Day

“Honey, are you almost ready for school?” Anya asked, walking into her daughter’s room. Anya looked over her daughter with a small smile, school will be good for her. Anastasia nodded, her dark brown curls bouncing as she nodded, “you look pretty.” Anastasia looked at herself in the mirror with a light sigh, a white dress hung from her body and a brown three-quarter sleeve sweater over the top; her hair fell in loose curls down to the center of her back. Anastasia only shrugged at her mother’s compliment and grabbed her purse off of the vanity after spraying perfume on her body.

“Well I’m going to head out,” Anastasia told her mother, checking herself out one last time before leaving her bedroom. Anastasia had no idea what the schooling was like in Maryland but she hoped that it wasn’t too much different than California.

Anastasia didn’t know what to expect when she entered the private school, except a sea of new faces and getting lost going through the corridor. Anastasia looked around her once she entered the school doors and then headed in the direction of the office, well she hoped it was the direction of the office. Nothing in her life ever turned out cliché, so it didn’t take her by surprise when she walked in a giant circle without finding the office. After a few wrong turns she finally made it to the office where nobody helped her until she cleared her throat. Mrs. Ratchet, immediately thinking of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, she hoped that this woman did not live up to the name. Anastasia also couldn’t help but compare her to a bird. Her face was long and skinny with a long nose and her dark, mud brown, eyes were too close together.

“Can I help you, miss?” Mrs. Ratchet asked her. Mrs. Ratchet seemed annoyed, blinking a few times, while she stared Anastasia downed.

“I’m new here,” Anastasia replied, quietly. “I got lost, sorry I’m late.” Mrs. Ratchet’s face lightened up when she realized that Anastasia didn’t just show up late for school looking for a late pass.

“Don’t worry dear, name?”

“Monroe, Anastasia,” Anastasia answered with a small smile on her lips. Anastasia watched while Mrs. Ratchet shuffled through a few papers on her desk until she picked up Anastasia’s.

“You’re schedule is the top paper; your locker combination and number is in the top left corner,” Mrs. Ratchet told her then handed Anastasia the stack of papers. “A map is attached, along with school policies. You missed your homeroom class but it’s fine for today and it seems your first class is AP Chemistry, room 223. “If you make a right out of the office and then up the stairs, make a left when you get to the top. Go all the way to the end of the corridor and it will be on the left hand side.” Mrs. Ratchet wrote something down on another slip of paper and handed it to her, “give this to Dr. Prentice.”

“Thank you, and I’m very glad you don’t live up to your last name,” Anastasia told her with a smile.

“Some may disagree,” Mrs. Ratchet chuckled a little then looking back at her computer.

Anastasia smiled and walked in the direction she was told, thanking God that she was given directions to her first class. Anastasia walked a little slower than usual looking at the classroom numbers so she wouldn’t get lost going to her second class of the day. Anastasia was glad her first class was Chemistry, it took the number one spot as her favorite class. Anastasia was surprised when she saw the door open to the classroom, the teacher, Dr. Prentice, and his students were laughing. Anastasia walked in, a blush rose to her cheeks when everyone’s eyes turned to her; she didn’t like being the new girl, she felt awkward and out of place. “Mrs. Ratchet told me to give this to you.”

“Ah, well miss Monroe, you can have a seat next to…hm?” Dr. Prentice seemed to ponder his decision, “what’s your favorite element and why?”

Anastasia had to think for a minute, “Carbon, because diamonds are a girls best friend. Also because, everyone wants to be around carbon.”

“Not oxygen?” Dr. Prentice asked.

“No, because Oxygen doesn’t like to share, plus I’d much rather be a whore than a greedy bitch,” Anastasia covered her mouth after saying the last part.

“Alright, you can sit next to Caroline,” Dr. Prentice told her, pointing to the open seat in the very front of the classroom. Anastasia sat down in the front of the class, “we’re not going to be doing anything today, except I want to find out what you remember from tenth grade.”

The rest of Anastasia’s day flew by, nothing important happened in any classes, just the syllabus was handed out and a few teachers played games to get to know one another. Anastasia already had a feeling that some of her teachers would test and grade a lot harder than those back in California but she liked mental challenges, after all she strived to attend a good college to become a doctor. However, the students in Baltimore were no different than the ones in California. Everyone already had their cliques but Anastasia didn’t mind; she wanted to keep to herself for the most part, then she wouldn’t have to tell her story.

It wasn’t until the end of the day when something interesting happened, she had literally run into Alex. Cliché. Anastasia knew they went to the same school and knew they would eventually run into each other, but she wanted it to happen later rather than sooner. “Hey,” Anastasia said, nonchalance radiating off of her. She didn’t forget what happened a few weeks ago, no, but she didn’t allow it to be the only thing she thought about.

“Hi,” Alex replied back, letting out a breath of relief; he hated awkwardness and he truly liked Anastasia, the one who spontaneously kissed him and wouldn’t let him get into her pants, not the shy Anastasia that hid behind her books. “I know we got off to a rough start—“

“Figuratively or physically?” Anastasia cut him off, her mouth not filtering anything she thought.

“Both,” Alex laughed a little. “Anyways, I was thinking we could start over? As friends?” Alex seemed hopeful, but Anastasia was a little hesitant. Anastasia knew boys like Alex and she knew his capabilities, but she could use a friend. “Wow, this is cliché?”

“Very,” Anastasia chuckled. “Only friends, I know about your little flings with the girls from public school. You’re pretty good at time management y’know?”

“How is that?” Alex asked curious to her reasoning.

“Managing your time with your girlfriends and still allowing yourself to hang out with your friends,” Anastasia shrugged. “I’m a pretty observant person.”

“So your stalking me?”

“More like watching closely.”

“Stalking.”

“Sure.”

Notes

I'm having a hard time writing the last few chapters so I may end it earlier than I originally intended and add a few chapters in. But I don't know. I want to finish this up before I go to school, though. I already know the ending I just have to write it :]. So basically, I just have to add a few chapters in and I should be able to post every day or every other day.

Later munchkins, gotta get up and cure cancer in the morning...just kidding, but not really.

Uhm.........sorry you find Patriots fans irritating. Even though I am, I'm quite excited for the Super Bowl because it's going to be a good football game, and a great way for Ray Lewis to end his career.
Anyway, love this chapter and this story! It's great :)
Poor Ana. :(
