A Little Bit Chilly
Four
My pen scribbled along the crisp white pages of the song-book. The lyrics, fresh from the mind. The ink still wet.
It was the thing that kept me alive. Without those moments I was dead to the world, dead to myself.
(Little did I know death was on my doorstep)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was in a rush. We had sound-check in a good five minutes, across the fair grounds, and I was stil stitting in the van. I was positive I had lost such track of time from sitting isolated in the smelly depths of our van.
My heart was beating fast. I was going to feel terrible if the entire show ran late because of me.
I tumbled out of the vehicle and began stumbling against the mud-slick grass. It was raining out, but not heavily. It was the annoying kind of drizzle that made the world seem...gross.
As I was running, I slipped and my head-butted some guy's chest.
I fell to the ground, sliding forward on my knees. I could feel the squelch of mud between my fingers as I pushed myself to my feet.
"Hey, you alright?" the person asked. I lifted my eyes to see the mysterious character. Not only did I feel bad about running late, I felt bad and embarrased for that entire scene.
He had mid-length, layered brown hair. It stuck up all over the place and was streaked with blonde in places. He wasn't bad looking, but he wasn't quite anything to write home about, either.
"Uh, yeah," I laughed nervously. He took my hand and pulled me to my feet.
"I'm Jack," he nodded. I wiped my hands against my jeans, leaving three muddy streaks on either side. I began to blush.
"I'm Nikki," I muttered, "and I have sound check so..."
"Oh!" Jack's eyebrows raised, and his eyes widened. "Yeah, go get to that. Find me later, though. I don't know where I'll be, but find me later!"
"Yeah," I began backing away. "Okay."
I ran.
