Three days. Three agonizing days I haven't heard from the doctors. I just really fucking wanted to see the boy.
I was on call so I really couldn't leave to just go see him, so I just stayed in the back lawn throwing the football with Rian and Zack. Zack was the first to speak up.

"Lex, you're gonna be fine."

I sighed throwing the football back at him.

"I know, I just really want to have a conversation with him where I-"

I was cut off by my phone buzzing in my pocket. I stared at it seeing it as a number I didn't recognize.

"Answer it dumb fuck!" Rian shouted.

I swiped the lock and put the phone to my ear.

"H-hello?"

"Hi, yes, Mr. Gaskarth?" It sounded like a nice young lady.

"Speaking"

"Yes, Mr. Barakat is up for visitors so you may come down. He's been asking for you."

I couldn't help but smile.

"R-really? He has?"

"Yes. Visiting hours are over in 3 hours but I know since you're on call I'll push them back as long as you need me to"

"Thank you so much ma'am. I'll try not to be too long"

"You're welcome. Have a nice day"

I hung up and shoved my phone back in my pocket and jumped up in triumph.

"He's okay! He's out of surgery and is up for visitors!" I said as I catched the football.

"Really? Go see him! I'm sure Captain will let you off early. Seems like a slow day." Said Rian.

"Lemme go see" I said as I threw Zack the ball and skipped off into the building.

I walked up to the big wooden door and knocked on it softly hearing a command to come in.

"Captain? Hey, I have a question"

He motioned for me to sit down on one of the plastic/metal chairs.

"Speak up boy. I don't have all day."

I took a deep breath and just spit it out.

"So there is this guy in the last house fire I saved and he just got out of surgery and he wants to see me and I was wondering if I could get let off a bit early today so I could go visit him."

Captain Davis looked up at me through his glasses and put down the piece of paper he was reading.

"Gaskarth... You remember how I always taught you to never get attached to victims before, right?"

"Who said I was attached?" I snapped back immedietly.

He sighed and leaned back in his chair. "I guess. Just make sure you're back before midnight. I need you and Flyzik on call for the rest of the night"

"Thank you so much sir." I said as I ran out of the room down the hall into my room seeing Flyzik laying down on his bed watching Micky Mouse Club House. Typical.

"Why are you in such a rush?" Matt said as I was stripping out of my clothes running in the bathroom.

"I'M GOING TO SEE JACK AND I NEED TO SHOWER CAUSE I SMELL BAD AND I JUST I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE HIM"

Matt laughed and then cringed when he saw me run across the bathroom naked.

"You really like this guy, huh?"

"I DON'T KNOW YET. I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE HE'S OKAY"

I didn't know why I was shouting but hey, whatever works.

I finally made it to the hospital and checked in and was walking down the long hallway to where his room was.
I made it to his door and took a deep breath before opening the door preparing myself for what I was about to see.

My thoughts were correct. He was beat up pretty bad. The burns looked better. The smaller ones weren't covered like his face and arms so I could see them but things like his chest was covered in gauze. He was turned away from me and so he couldn't see me when I walked in. He was just causally laid out on the bed sitting up watching some crappy TV show.
Connected to his arm was a IV probably administering him pain medicine.

I knocked softly on the door to get his attention and his head turned around quickly before almost jumping off the bed but probably decided that wasn't going to end well.

"Alex!! You're here!"

I smiled and walked over to his bed and pulled up a chair and sat down.

"Yeah haha. I heard you wanted to see me"

"I did. I really did. I wanted to tell you some things."

Oh god what did I do.

"I just... I just wanted to tell you thanks. When I was in a state where I could one on one tell you when I wasn't in so much pain."

"You're welcome. So very welcome. Hey.. So uh, I was wondering... Are you able to walk? Or are you in too much pain?"

Jack laughed and threw his legs off the bed slowly. He was only wearing sweat pants leaning low off his hips showing more gauze.

"I can walk. Why?"

I took a deep breath and let it out slowly. Hears my chance.

"Mr. Barakat, would you do the honors of being my lunch date? I could walk you down to the little cafe if you want?"

"Lex, are you hitting on me?"

Shit.

"No! Haha, I just wanna start a friendship with you. You seem like you would be a very good friend"

"Damn Skippy!"
