Stories Untold

Maddie

“I thought I already did, Jack,” I glared at my husband, petting my cat’s head, while she slept in my arms.

“No, you just sent them back to my lawyer without one,” he glared straight back, walking up the steps.

“And I thought it would make it clear I did not want the divorce,” I shrugged my shoulders, walking inside, slamming and locking the door shut.

The banging on the door woke Riley with a yelp, and she quickly jumped out of my arms, running under the nearest chair. I rolled my eyes, walking towards the kitchen. The banging never ended.

“Go away Jack!” I yelled from the kitchen doorway.

“Open the door, Madelyn!” He shouted back.

“No Jack! Now leave before the cops get here!” I picked up the phone and began to call my cousin who happened to be the head cop here. “Hey Jim, I have a favor to ask.”

After I got off the phone with my cousin, I started to make dinner for myself, sighing happily that the banging finally stopped after I threatened the cops on him. Humming to the song in my head, I continued dicing up the onions for my vegetable soup. As I turned around to get the noodles and the celery, I screamed, seeing Jack leaning against the doorway.

“Smells good,” he smirked like everything was normal.

“You know,” I smirked right back, glancing down at the knife in my hand. “You really shouldn’t sneak up on someone with a knife, Jack.”

He rolled his eyes and opened his mouth to respond with his comeback, but the knocking on the door stopped him. I smiled at him, before setting down my knife and walking over towards the door. Opening it up, I was brought into a hug by my older cousin, as I heard Jack growl under his breath.

“Did you really have to call your cousin?” I stood with my back to him, rolling my eyes at Jim.

“Yes,” I turned around, glaring at him. “Because you won’t leave my house.”

“It’s still my house too,” he smirked, crossing his arms over his chest.

“Ha. Have you paid a bill for this house in over four years,” I growled. “When you left me here pregnant?”

“You know fucking well that was not my fault!” He scowled at me, making me huff.

“That’s enough you two,” Jim interrupted my chance to have a word. “Maddie, you know full well that this is just as much his house as it is yours, seeing as you two are still married, but he doesn’t have a right to come in without your permission since you did take over the rights of it. So Jack, either you leave now, or I will have to book you on trespassing.”

“Fine, I’ll leave,” Jack shot me another glare. “But I expect to see you soon, Madelyn.”

I just rolled my eyes for the hundredth time today, watching as he stormed out of the house for the second time. Sighing, I glanced at my cousin, shaking my head. Jim did nothing, but walked forward and placed me in another hug. I started sobbing, wondering where I went wrong in the past.

“Don’t worry Maddie, everything will fall into place soon enough,” Jim rubbed my back. “He’ll see what he did and is doing is not right.”

“That’s where I think you’re wrong, Jim,” I sniffled, wiping tears off my face. “He will never see how much he hurt me, how much I still care for him, how much I still get those stupid butterflies around him, and how much I just want to be in his arms again. I miss my Jack, the Jack I fell in love with.”

“He’s still in there, Maddie,” he sighed. “Just give this time, him being home might spark something in him. Might show him how stupid he has been these past four years.”

Opening my mouth up, I went to reply, only to be stopped by a small cry and running footsteps. I turned towards the hallway, to find my four year old daughter standing there with her thumb in her mouth. How she slept through all the banging gets me, but she was always the heavy sleeper.

“Mamma,” she muttered around her thumb. “What’s for dinner?”

“What, no hi for cousin Jim?” Jim pouted. Upon hearing his voice, her eyes grew wide, and she grinned.

“Jim!” She ran towards his open arms, laughing as he tickled her.

Shaking my head, I detached my daughter off him, bring her into the kitchen. I placed her in her chair, checking on the soup. Jim came in and sat down, and began to have a conversation with his second cousin. She loved when he came over after work and in his uniform. She liked to play with his handcuffs.

“One bowl of Mommy’s homemade chicken noodle soup, right up,” I grinned, placing her bowl of soup in front of her.

“Thank wou, Mommy,” she smiled up at me. She always had trouble with her Y’s.

“You’re welcome, Wendy,” I kissed the nip of her head, running my hand through her shoulder length brown hair.

“You know you’re going to have to tell him the truth soon,” Jim pointed out, making me sigh.

“I know.”

Watching my daughter eat, I noticed she had many features of her father; a nose slightly too big for her face, deep brown eyes, and a long lean body. With her so much like her father and Uncle Alex, it will be very hard to hide her from the family she never knew. She is very over active and hyper, making her be all over the place most of the time.
