As Long as You Love Me

It made him feel a little less distant from the rest of the world

Alex sat on his bed. He had been sat on his bed for the past three hours and had no intent, no reason, to move.

He'd woken up at one, because he's a teenage boy, showered and got dressed, ready to go out as soon as Jack texted him a time and a place. When he didn't, Alex decided to get on with some homework, a rare occasion. Pulling his English books from his bag and making a start on the essay he had to write about Romeo and Juliet "How does Shakespeare use language to reveal the love between Romeo and Juliet in Act 1 scene 5 and Act 2 scene 2?" he stared at the paper for a few moments, how did Shakespeare do that? With a sigh, he put pen to paper and started writing out what ever it was he could remember the teacher saying in the lesson.

Alex was good at English, the writing part anyway and it was one of few subjects; Maths, English, French and occasionally Life Skills, that he actually enjoyed. Not that he enjoyed French, he just liked sitting next to Rian. He'd always had this knack for writing, ever since he was a kid. He was especially good at writing lyrics and poems, he always struggled to write more than a few paragraphs. He found that if he tried to make it longer he'd over think it and the idea would fizzle out and completely lose its charm. He liked the mystery behind lyrics, how they so often feel like they've been written exactly for you, yet the writer doesn't even know you or your story. It made him feel a little less distant from the rest of the world.

Once he'd written what he deemed to be acceptable as an essay, he moved to his bed, checking his phone hoping to have a missed call from Jack. And that's when he sat on his bed for three hours, waiting for the message from Jack he only just realised he wasn't going to get because Jack was going to be at the party, all his friends were. So, with nobody to call and nothing to do, he spent the day in his room with his thoughts, trying to keep confidence in his decision to skip the party. After all, there's fifty two weeks in a year, meaning fifty two weekends and fifty two Saturdays, he couldn't miss much by skipping one, right?

He was instantly proved very wrong on Monday morning when Jack found him
"You should have been there dude" It was fucking awesome!" he grinned as they took their seats in home room
"There was girls, like, everywhere, literally!" Alex was fairly sure there weren't girls literally everywhere and tried to look even a little bit interested
"Argh, Alex! You missed the party of the year, the party of the century!" Jack practically shouted, grabbing the older boy by the shoulders and shaking him violently in an attempt to get his point across.
"Jack, put Alex down." their home room teacher barked as she entered the room, already more than used to their antics after having them since they started high school. Jack let him go but continued talking as she took the register, recounting the nights events in as much detail as he could manage, only pausing to answer his name on the register.
"I'm not even kidding, everyone got so fucking wasted and you know Jonah?"
"Yeah" Alex nodded, because who didn't know Jonah?
"Well he was drunk and high and apparently he set himself on fire somehow and someone had to push him in the pool to put it out, I think someone got a photo." Alex laughed, but Jack had more
"And Emma Marlow was off her face and, according to Laura Steele who was counting, she made out with like thirty four people"
"Were you ones of the lucky ones?" Alex chuckled, raising an eyebrow
"Unfortunately not, I couldn't find her" Jack shrugged and Alex laughed again.
"You seriously should have gone, I think it's gonna be the best one for a while" Jack spoke more calmly now, pushing against the table to balance on the back two legs of his chair. Alex just shrugged
"There'll be other parties"
"Not quite like that one, though, it was insane." Jack chuckled and Alex forced out a laugh, eyes turning down to his hands that were tangled together on the table. Jack's eyebrows furrowed when he saw the odd look on his friend's face
"It would have been better with you there though, it always is." Alex's smile grew at that.

Although he was still kind of, slightly pleased he'd skipped the party he still appreciated Jack's sentiment and he had to admit he probably would have had a decent time had he gone because he would have been in good company; but then he'd inevitably do what he always did and drink that bit too much or do that thing that's just one step too stupid and ruin the whole night for himself.
"Anything's better with me there" he joked when he saw the hints of worry on his friends features, relief flowing through him as he watched the worry disappear with Jack's laugh. As much as he loved the boy, Alex didn't really fancy a heart-to-heart with the boy at that moment in time. The rest of home room went by in a flash, Jack filling Alex in on all of his, and everyone else's, antics at the party. Alex was happy to be free from the boy for his English lesson with Zack but Zack only did the same think, just from an only slightly different perspective considering he and Jack had spent most of the night together.

So, when Alex dragged his bag into his next lesson Life Skills , and slumped into his chair he was tired of hearing about how awesome the party had been and both rejoicing in and regretting his decision not to go. On one hand, he'd missed out on the party of the year, on the other, if it really was as great as everyone claimed he would have definitely got hammered and would still be feeling the after effects. With a sigh he opened the letter that was waiting on his desk slowly before reading, and then writing.

"Ariel,
Don't remind me ;) and I'm one step ahead of you! HUGE party planned, you're only 18 once right? Although I'm getting kinda sick of random house parties, it's always the same old stuff and it's getting kinda old :/
Next time I'll release my inner kung-fu fighter but if I injure anyone I'm definitely blaming you ;)
Getting drunk is not nearly as impressive as a back flip! That's fucking awesome! I wish I could do one D:
And your calculations are correct, it is Monday and my weekend was okay I guess. Like I said before I'm getting tired of the constant parties so I skipped one on Saturday and turns out it was the party of the year and it's all anybody has talked about all day. Still kinda glad I didn't go though. When you get this itl be Tuesday so how was your weekend, Monday and your Tuesday so far?
Alex"
