On Our Last Night

Angels Fly In The Air Tonight

-Thomas-
She was sitting with her legs tucked underneath her and her hand resting on the damp grass beside her and her face streaked with tears. There were no cuts or bruises on her pale face, her deep green eyes were set on me when I approached her. I remember that lost feeling, that feeling of being so confused as to why everything is so suffocating and as bright as the sun. I folded my wings behind my back and looked down at her before crouching so we were eye to eye. “Hello.” I extended my hand.

“H-hi.” Her fingers were thin, her hand was small. She put it in mine and I helped her stand up. “What’s your name?” Her voice trembled as she looked up at me.

“Thomas, I prefer Tom or Tommy though. My little brother…he called me Tommy.” I cleared my throat and looked around the empty clearing. This was my least favorite part of all of this. “What is your name?”

“Normandy.” She looked up at me and there was a glimmer in her voice. Normandy looked around, her cheeks turning a soft pink as if she was embarrassed to be talking to me.

“Where are we?”

“Where do you think we are?” I watched the features in her face as she considered my question. She took in our surroundings with confusion in her expression. I remember that feeling too. The thrush green grass that was shades brighter than anything I’d ever seen, the water in the pond a few feet to our right that was too blue-it didn’t even reflect off the sky. The apples in the trees in the immediate distance were bright red, they seemed to glow. This was a strange place.

“I don’t know.” She frowned slowly.

“What’s the last thing you remember?” I looked up at her face, my thumb brushing against her cheek reassuringly. We’re supposed to make them feel good, feel at home.

“I was driving my car. This big rig pulled out when I had the right of way.” Normandy’s voice was suddenly thick with emotion; she had tears falling down her cheeks. Her hands clutched at her arms and she teetered back and forth and mumbled under her voice slowly. Suddenly, as if she’d put all the pieces back together again, Normandy looked up at me and let her lower lip tremble. “Am I dead?” She squeaked.

“Why would you assume that?” I pulled the handkerchief out of my pocket and held it out to her. In all honesty I’d never even seen a handkerchief before I’d died but now I can never seem to lose the one that magically appeared in my back pocket after I’d received my wings. It’s white and it’s got black stitched yarn like border and I’ve tried to lose it at least a thousand times and it always ends up back in my left back pocket. To say it’s frustrating is to be understating it.

“Because you’re too hot to be real.” Normandy snorted, interrupting my thought bubble. I raised an eyebrow as she took the handkerchief and stayed optimistically quiet, only for her to burst out laughing. “Sarcasm. Don’t worry,” her hand covered her mouth and she erupted into giggles that made her eyes flutter and her frame quake. “But really….” She gasped and laughed harder. It took her minutes to calm down and she fanned her face and then spoke to me. “Everything’s so clean and bright and you have wings. I saw them. So you’re some sort of angel and that means I’m some sort of dead. So the big rig ran me over and I’m dead. Right?” At least she wasn’t crying anymore. The bitchy sarcasm wasn’t savory though. Normandy climbed to her feet and dried her cheeks off, her small hands trembling with some sort of agitation she was trying to suppress. “How bad was I? I mean…the paramedics didn’t even get the chance to try to save me did they?”

I stood and ran my hands down the front of my slacks, my eyes catching hers. We weren’t allowed to talk about the circumstances of their death if they are already to terms with being dead. In all actuality the Book tells us not to get into this much detail with them as it is already. “Do you believe you’re dead?”

“Hit me.” Normandy demanded instead of answering my question. “I want you to hit me as hard as you can.”

“Why the hell would I want to do that?” I couldn’t help the laugh that barked out of my throat.
“Because if I’m fucking dead then hit me, I won’t fucking feel it will I?” She sounded so sure I almost felt bad for her.

“You’re telling me you won’t feel anything if I hit you? You felt enough pain and panic to cry when you figured out that you were dead. You honestly believe you’ll feel nothing if I hit you right now?” Death is like a curse….an eternal rest for the frail bodied and the weak minded but a second chance at immortality for those of the human condition who don’t go quietly. Angels feel emotions, we feel pain, we feel hope and faith…I know others who have even found love after their death. The many common misconceptions of life and death make me sick to the pit of my stomach, but it’s not with omniscience that I feel this way. It’s just with the simple fact that I can watch the humans run around like retards and wasting the prospect of life they are given when so few will get this second chance.

“So how the hell else am I supposed to believe that I am truly dead!?” Her voice trembled as she stared up at me. Her hands rested on her hips and her lower lip jutted out. “How will I know this isn’t all just some fucked up dream as a byproduct of too much Stella.”

“You drink Stella? Personal favorite of mine.” I grinned wickedly thinking of my brother’s fridge. Other than frozen pizza and several cases of Stella it’s empty. He’s definitely my brother. “All right. You want me to prove you’re dead?” I’m not one for sticking to the rules. It’s why I get the best results. “Give me your arm.”

Normandy hesitantly held her arm out to me with her palm up and her fingers curled slightly, her pale skin was translucent enough to show the lifeless veins that once kept her blood alive. I used my thumbnail, I made it grow longer and get a little sharper, to cut her wrist open. My cut was precisely right across the veins, slitting them open. She should have started bleeding; we both knew the cut should have made her ruby blood spill all over her pale skin. But she didn’t. The two of us stared at her wrist until the incision healed, without a single drop of blood being spilt. Fascination spread across her features and she looked up at me. “I’m dead.”

“You’re dead.” My nail retracted and I held my hand out to the dumbstruck girl. “Can we quit with the hostility and get on with this process?” I didn’t mean to get so short with her suddenly but this was taking much longer than it needed to and I was due to Earth in less than a living hour to check on my brother. He was playing a show in the park downtown from his house; they were showing a new song. To say the least I was entirely excited.

“You don’t have to be such a prick.” She crossed her arms over her chest and glared up at me. “Lead the way angel dude.”

“Angel dude? That’s one I’ve never heard before.” I chuckled dryly and rubbed my face. “You know, the more you try to argue with me and be snappy towards me this whole process will be a lot more drug out then it needs to be.” I extended my wings and glanced down at her, offering my hand again.

Normandy’s small hand wrapped itself in mine and she let out a small ‘oof’ when I pulled her to my chest with force. She wiggled her way around until her back was to my chest. I’d never met anyone who wanted to watch the flight before. It takes a lot to puzzle an angel, but she’d certainly taken the cake with this one. A sense of thrill swept through me at the thought of finally experiencing something new. Eleven years is a long time to not be amazed or stupefied by at least one new thing.
-----
If you focus on a light long enough without blinking your eyes will make it seem like its fading until you blink, and then the light is just as bright as it was when you started. That’s kind of how human life is to us angels, even those of us who have been ‘omniscient’ for only a year. Because in a single day we see so many lights fading, and then we’ll blink and hundreds of new lights are clouding our vision. The Big Man gave me the blessing of letting me ramble about my comparison of human life to the glow of a light bulb once. After a while, when I was sure my incessant babbling was causing Him to get angry, He’d held his hand up and stopped me dead in my tracks. I’d figured I was in trouble. Instead, He begun to laugh
.
“You are wise beyond your years Thomas, even for a man under my employment.” His voice had boomed through the throne room and his laughter had made my ears sing. His praise was rare. “If only they could see their lives the way you see them, if only you had seen your life that way in time. I wouldn’t have so many angels.” He’d chuckled and motioned for me to get out.

That was nearly three years ago. I’ve never quite forgotten the conversation we had that day. It’s half the reason I keep such close tabs on my little brother. I don’t want him to suffer the same fate I did, but he doesn’t seem to really acknowledge his life’s worth. It bothers me deeply.
----
I was perched on a metal rafter fifty feet above the stage watching my brother’s best friend jump around stage with his guitar in his hands, his abnormally large nose looking more and more like a beak with every passing second. Alex was singing into his microphone, clapping his hands over his head to the beat the slightly bald one was hammering out on his drums. The other guitarist was just standing in his little part of the stage, singing back up to my brother and playing, obliviously just there. I laughed and shook my head when Alex shoved the hyperactive one back to his place. Watching the four of them perform is the funniest thing I’ve ever seen. It fills me with a sense of pride also; he’s done well for himself.

It had been a good hour and a half, the crowd had been very responsive to the boys and they’d had a lot of fun with their shenanigans. They were playing their last song of the night, a ballad that had never ceased to amaze me. It’s titled Lullabies and Alex hardly ever allows it on the set list. It’s about me. Every time I hear it I feel my heart plummet to the bottom of my stomach. Tonight was no different.

“Tommy c’mon.” Tour touched my shoulder as Alex wiped his eyes after the song was done. “She’s about go to trial.”

I got up, smiled down at my little brother although he’d never see, and followed her up.
